Source: www.leedsrugby.comengage Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos have confirmed that full back Brent Webb has today had surgery on his spine to resolve the back injury that ruled him out of Saturday's Grand Final at Old Trafford.
Webb had the surgery following a further scan on the injury and is now expected to be out of action for between five and six months.
Commenting on the surgery Leeds Rhinos Head Physiotherapist Meirion Jones said, "Brent has had microdiscectomy on acute disc herniation. It is hoped that the surgery will clear up Brent's current symptoms however key will be a sustained period of five to six months rehabilitation to compliment the surgery to get Brent back to full fitness."
Commenting on the news Head Coach Brian McClennan added, "All our thoughts are with Webby at the moment. He is a special guy and someone who we all love dearly. We have got an excellent medical staff and they will be making sure that Brent receives the best possible treatment and comes back stronger than ever."
Webb has been replaced in the New Zealand World Cup squad by St George Illawarra outside back Jason Nightingale.

The Pirtek Kiwis have today been forced to make two changes to their squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.
Leeds fullback Brent Webb and Melbourne prop Jeff Lima have both been ruled out with injury and have been replaced by St George Illawarra winger-fullback Jason Nightingale and Vodafone Warriors front rower Evarn Tuimavave.
Webb (27), who has played 17 tests for the Kiwis, had been hopeful of recovering from a back injury that kept him out of the Rhinos' English Super League grand final triumph over St Helens last weekend.
However, Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington advised the New Zealand Rugby League that Webb would be having surgery overnight.
He said Webb had a spinal injury that was likely to rule him out for six months.
"It's bad news for all of us," he said in an email to the NZRL.
Lima (26), who played three tests last year, has a knee injury which is worse than first thought.
"We've been in touch with both Brent and Jeff and they're obviously devastated," said Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney.
"Webby's situation wasn't looking too good but we all remained hopeful awaiting a final decision.
"Jeff has been troubled by a knee problem but got through the NRL finals and we thought he would be right. However, he had exploratory surgery which has shown the injury is worse than expected."
But while the Pirtek Kiwis had lost two first-choice selections, Kearney was delighted the selectors were able to call on two quality replacements.
"Both Jason and Evarn were very unlucky to miss out in the first place. We couldn't fit everyone in," he said.
"They've had very good seasons in the NRL, both of them playing in the finals and Evarn being part of a Warriors team that finished the year outstandingly.
"While we lose Webby, we still have plenty of options at fullback, and that hasn't always been the case with Kiwi teams in recent years.
"Lance (Hohaia) was great there for the Warriors this year, Sam (Perrett) and Krisnan (Inu) both played at fullback for the Kiwis last year and Jason can also cover the position."
Nightingale (22) made his Kiwi debut in the Centenary Test against Australia at the SCG on May 9.
Tuimavave (24), who now has 99 NRL appearances to his name, is yet to play for the Kiwis but was in the 19-man squad in Brisbane for last year's Anzac Test against the Kangaroos.
He was one of the standby players on the selectors' list and was yesterday called into the All Golds for their match against the New Zealand Maori in New Plymouth on Sunday. He has replaced club-mate Sam Rapira who is being rested after being used in all of the Vodafone Warriors' 27 NRL matches.
The All Golds and Maori are now in New Plymouth after being welcomed to Taranaki with a powhiri at Owae Marae in Waitara yesterday.
Both teams have training sessions at Yarrow Stadium this morning.
Besides being a farewell match for Wiki as well as his long-time Kiwi team-mates Stacey Jones and Logan Swann, Sunday's match is being used to prepare the Pirtek Kiwis for their World Cup challenge. They also have a test against Tonga at Mt Smart Stadium on October 18 before heading to Sydney for their first World Cup clash against Australia on October 26.
The Maori are also using Sunday's match to build up for their match against the Australian Indigenous team, the curtain-raiser to the Australia-New Zealand test.
