Players from all seven Clubs that missed the NRL Finals Series have had at least one player named in the Train-On Squad today to cover for the 2006 Tri Nations Series and the Prime Ministers XIII against Papua New Guinea.
Penrith dominate the Train-On with five players named including Craig Stapleton, which is the biggest surprise selection of the players announced.
Notable omissions include North Queensland fullback Matt Bowen, Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley, Sydney Roosters hooker Craig Wing and Penrith winger Luke Rooney.
Bowen's omission is no great surprise following his disappointing form in the second half of the season with the fullback position in the Australian side to be a shoot out between Karmichael Hunt, Greg Inglis and Brett Stewart. Kimmorley was over looked in the Train-On Squad for Craig Gower and Scott Prince whilst Wing's omission will almost certainly pave the way for Cameron Smith to make his International debut in the Tri-Nations while Robbie Farah and Luke Priddis will be the contenders for the hooker position in the Prime Ministers XIII clash. Rooney has been a regular in representative sides, however his form for Penrith has been disappointing.
South Sydney winger Nathan Merritt's excellent season has been rewarded with selection in the Train-On Squad. Merritt finished the season with 22 tries and scored more than a quater of the Rabbitohs total. It's only the second time in Premiership history that a player has finished leading try-scorer when his team finished in last position with the other player being Nigel Vagana in 2002. Excluding Vagana's efforts in 2002, the last time a player from the last ranked team won a major award such as Merritt being Leading Tryscorer was in 1983 when Western Suburbs five-eighth Terry Lamb won the Gold Dally M for Player of the Year despite the Magpies finishing in last position. Merritt will almost certainly play in the Prime Ministers XIII clash and could push for Tri Nations selection.
2005 Golden Boot winner Anthony Minichiello wasn't considered due to injury.
The train-on squad is:
Cowboys: Luke O'Donnell, Johnathan Thurston, Carl Webb
Warriors: Steven Price
Wests Tigers: Robbie Farah, Scott Prince
Panthers: Craig Gower, Luke Priddis, Craig Stapleton, Trent Waterhouse, Rhys Wesser
Sharks: Paul Gallen
Roosters: Craig Fitzgibbon, Chris Flannery, Amos Roberts, Anthony Tupou
Rabbitohs: Nathan Merritt
The team for the Prime Minister's XIII, to be coached by Mal Meninga, will be named on Monday 18 September.
The Kangaroos squad for the Tri Nations, coached by Ricky Stuart, will be finalised on Monday 2 October.
Further players will be added as teams drop out of the eight.
