Interest for Thurston, Pritchard Panther for Life & Roosters Coach
Wed May 20, 2009
by Steve Mascord
NORTH Queensland superstar Johnathan Thurston has revealed in Rugby League Week that five clubs have already shown interest in signing him for 2011.

And the magazine today reveals that Thurston's former team, the Bulldogs, is one of the three NRL teams to have already approached him despite the 18 months he has left in Townsville. Two more suitors are from Super League.

"I come off-contact next year, but I've spoken to my manager about leaving all negotiations until the end of the season," the Queensland Origin star told RLW.

"There has been a lot of interest, but I just want to concentrate on my footy and I've told the Cowboys I'll leave all contract talk until then.

"I'll just have to see what options are available and what one best suit me and my career.

"So if the best option for me is to leave the club, then I'll be looking after myself and I'll do that.

"But I've enjoyed my time here at the Cowboys and they'll certainly be the first people I talk to.

"This is definitely the biggest deal of my career. I'll be 27 next year, so I don't think there so I don't think there will be too many more contracts after this one and I want to make the most of it."

One man who isn't going anywhere is the player once the most unsettled in the sport - Penrith back rower Frank Pritchard.

Pritchard has repeatedly asked the Panthers for a release in recent seasons but tells Rugby League Week: "In the next couple of weeks, I might sign a deal.

"I'm keen to stay. That (asking for a release) is all in the past. I want to stay at Penrith, hopefully stay for life.

"It's a young team and I think in the years to come we probably could get a premiership. I started my career here. Hopefully I'll finish it here.''

The 14th edition of League Week for the year also has more than two pages of fallout from the scandal surrounding its suspended columnist, Matthew Johns. Mark Geyer has his first say on the furore.

Tony Adams reveals the other names alongside Brian Noble's on the coaching director shopping list for Sydney Roosters while a brutally honest Brett Kimmorley admits in the weekly 'A-List' feature how lucky he feels to be out of troubled Cronulla.

"Looking at what's happening ... I think I got lucky in the timing of when I left, when I sort of got pushed out,'' said Kimmorley, who admits he and Sharks coach Ricky Stuart just "didn't get on''.

And the NRL's former chief medical officer says it is not uncommon for coaches to pressure doctors into letting injured players take the field despite potential long-term risks - and that some teams inject multiple players every week.

"Some doctors are able to withstand the pressure of a coach that heavies them and wants to play a player who is injured and other doctors will argue the point in the interests of the player,'' says Hugh Hazard.

"There are ... clubs in the competition who will be injecting three or four players a week which I no longer have any sympathy for.''

Plus the Mole, Queensland and NSW Country, worldwide scoreboard and the game's best photography. Only in RUGBY LEAGUE WEEK, OUT NOW

Bowen and Thurston re-united for Cowboys season opener
Tue March 10, 2009
by Matthew O'Neill
Dynamic Cowboys duo Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen are reunited for the all-Queensland clash against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Thurston and Bowen played very little football together last year and statistics have proven that the Cowboys are cellar dwellers when one or both are missing, but when on the field together they are up there as one of the leading sides.

Bowen missed much of last year with a knee injury and Thurston missed parts of the season as well with the Cowboys slumping from 3rd to 15th position as a result.

New Cowboys recruit Willie Tonga makes his debut for the Townsville based club after missing much of the 2008 season with a knee injury, which was his last for the Bulldogs.
