As a result of the ongoing difficulties he has with both his knee and partly due to his struggles with diabetes, Thompson has found it increasingly difficult to get his body right to endure the rigours of playing NRL football on a weekly basis, hence his decision to retire following the Panthers clash.
A stalwart of 238 games in the NRL in a career stretching back to 1995, Thompson was emotional at his press conference but was also looking forward to the next phase of his life.
"Retiring will give me the chance to deal with my injuries and with my diabetes and I will also have time to watch my daughter grow up," Thompson said.
"It has been a hard six months getting my knee and health right and I knew it was time to retire from this great game."Thompson has been included in the Sharks 17-man squad for the match which will mark the re-opening of the newly renovated Toyota Stadium, with a big screen tribute planned for Thompson before the match and a lap of honour after the full time siren.

Source: www.sharks.com.auSharks hitman Lance Thompson took a shock to the system on Sunday morning following the club's last round win against the Raiders in Canberra.
An injured Thompson travelled to Canberra to support his team mates in their final game for 2007 when Club Doctor Dr David Givney diagnosed him with Type 1 Diabetes.
Thompson had been unwell for a couple of weeks, however his condition had gone unnoticed due to his knee injury and his lack of regular training over the past 3-4 weeks. Dr Givney was first alerted to the possibility of diabetes following Thompson rapid 10kg weight loss.
"It's been hard to come to terms with as it only happened on Sunday, so it was a bit of a shock to the system.
"I have to remain positive in order to deal with the condition and learn to manage it properly with medication, a change in diet and also a change in lifestyle," Thompson said.
Thompson's condition is insulin dependent therefore part of his management program requires him to inject himself with insulin four times a day for the rest of his life.
Thompson is only the second player in the NRL to be diagnosed with Diabetes. Manly's Brett Stewart also has Type 1 diabetes and manages his condition well enough so that it doesn't impact on his club or representative career.
