Source: www.warriors.co.nzVodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah has taken exception to Melbourne accusing the Vodafone Warriors of unfairness over the club's decision not to be involved in helping Storm captain Cameron Smith defend a grapple tackle charge from Monday night's NRL clash.
"Considering events on Monday night, it's a bit rich for the Storm to start complaining about a lack of fairness," he said.
"Out of respect to the Storm and their position as the defending premiers, we took the view that we should stay away from making any comments about some of the things that happened before and during the two games (NYC and NRL) on Monday night.
"But if anyone should be accused of a lack of fairness it's Melbourne. Their handling of aspects of the event certainly did not appear to be in the interest of either fair play or player welfare.
"Before both the NYC and NRL games, Melbourne refused to agree to allow 20-minute water breaks and 15-minute halftime breaks in both matches as permitted in extreme conditions within the NRL's operations manual."Scurrah said the Vodafone Warriors had been forced to take the matter to the NRL's match manager to have it resolved.
"The conditions were extreme. It was incredibly hot but Melbourne wouldn't support our request to have the special provisions invoked," he said.
"Where was their sense of responsibility to their and our players' welfare?
"We then had the matter of them delaying the start to the NRL game by more than three minutes, leaving our players out on the field waiting in the extreme heat. And then our players had to wait more than three minutes again for the Melbourne players to reappear for the second half."Regarding the grapple tackle charge against Smith, the Melbourne club today chose not to defend the charge resulting from a tackle by Smith on Vodafone Warriors centre Brent Tate.
Melbourne chief executive Brian Waldron said the Vodafone Warriors' decision not to become involved had
"interfered with our ability to defend the charge."Scurrah said:
"We have the greatest admiration for Cameron Smith as a player and a person but the whole area surrounding grapple tackle charges is new and difficult," he said.
"Given the emphasis the NRL and all clubs have placed on eradicating the grapple tackle we took the view that in this instance the judicial process should deal with the matter."Melbourne has since been fined $A10,000 by the NRL for delaying the start to the match and the resumption after halftime.

Source: www.warriors.co.nzOff-season signing Brent Tate is on target to make his first appearance for the Vodafone Warriors in their NRL trial against Manly on Queensland's Sunshine Coast on Friday night (February 29).
Tate was today named in a 23-man Vodafone Warriors squad which heads to Australia tomorrow morning to prepare for the clash at Stockland Park (formerly Quad Park) in Kawana.
The 25-year-old former Brisbane Broncos star is fully recovered from the knee surgery he needed after making his 12th State of Origin appearance for Queensland in the final match of last year's series against New South Wales.
Tate, who has played 15 tests for Australia and 114 times for Brisbane, missed the first two trials against Newcastle and the Auckland Vulcans but was always earmarked to make his return to the playing field in the hit-out against Manly.
Like Tate, captain Steve Price, centre Jerome Ropati, second rower Logan Swann and winger Michael Crockett missed the opening build-up games but are in contention to line up against the Sea Eagles.
Also included are Ruben Wiki, Micheal Luck, Simon Mannering, Manu Vatuvei, Wairangi Koopu and Aidan Kirk who sat out last Saturday's 50-0 win over the Vulcans.
While the NRL side faces Manly in the main game on Friday night, the Vodafone Junior Warriors are also on the programme in one of two curtain-raisers, taking on Brisbane in their fourth pre-season trial but their first against another side lining up in the new under-20 National Youth Competition (NYC).
The Vodafone Junior Warriors had 30-22 and 40-14 wins against the Auckland Vulcans in their first two trials. Despite being without seven frontline players (playing for the NRL side in Auckland), an experienced NYC combination including players from the club's Allied Work Force development squad accounted for the Taranaki Sharks 48-26 in New Plymouth last Saturday.
Coach Tony Iro has named a 19-man squad to travel to Australia including Russell Packer, Scott Jones, Leeson Ah Mau, Kevin Locke, Elijah Taylor and Ben Matulino, who all had game time for the NRL side in last weekend's trial at Henham Park, Otahuhu.
After their trial, the Vodafone Junior Warriors will look ahead to their season launch in Auckland on March 10 while the Vodafone Warriors will officially kick off their 2008 NRL campaign with a lunch in the Club Lounge at Mt Smart Stadium on March 12. Australian legends Tom Raudonikis and Steve Roach are guest speakers. Go to
