Stanley set to line up for Junior Kiwis
Thu October 11, 2007
by NZRL
St George Illawarra's Chase Stanley will be one of several players with NRL experience lining up for the Junior Kiwis against their Australian counterparts at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.

The 18-year-old is in the 19-man senior Kiwi squad preparing for the Centenary Test against the Kangaroos but today he was confirmed as a starter in the centres for the international against the Junior Kangaroos.

It follows his naming as stand-off yesterday for the All Golds in their Centenary International against the Northern Division in Warrington on October 20, a match which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tour to the United Kingdom by the original All Golds.

Stanley has been training with the Kiwis in Wellington this week but will now switch to the Junior Kiwis as they prepare to face opponents who have had two matches on tour heading into this clash. The Junior Kangaroos beat the senior Fiji side 15-14 but fell 6-44 to a Tonga side yesterday which included Parramatta back rower Feleti Mateo.

"Chase is a hugely exciting prospect who has a big future in front of him. We want to blood him in these two games in the next week," said Kiwi coach Gary Kemble.

"This tour is very much about bringing in new players and building our base ahead of next year's World Cup. We see Chase as being a significant part of those plans."

The nephew of All Black rugby union great Joe Stanley had 18 matches for the Dragons in his debut season in the NRL.

South Sydney halfback Eddie Paea - the side's captain - and his Rabbitohs team-mate Eddy Pettybourne are also included. They both made their NRL debuts this year.

The player with the most NRL experience is fullback Patrick Ah Van, who has appeared 27 times for the Vodafone Warriors. Ah Van was in the Junior Kiwis last year as was Sydney Roosters winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall, another player with NRL experience.

Dragon Rookie Chase Stanley has officially extended his contract with St George Illawarra for a further two years, meaning he will remain with the Club until the end of 2010.

The Hurstville United junior became the youngest St George Illawarra NRL player ever when he made his debut in Round 2 this year at OKI Jubilee Stadium against Newcastle.

Stanley, 18, scored a try with his first touch in NRL football and in his 12 games to date has scored five tries and sits equal second behind Matt Cooper as the Club's leading try scorer this season.

"As a local junior I always wanted to play NRL for the Dragons and I didn't expect it to come so soon," said Stanley. "I'm very happy to know that I will be playing with the Dragons for a few more years and am grateful for the opportunities I have been given here."

Dragons Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust praised the efforts of Stanley and said he was pleased to have finalised his arrangement with the Club.

"Chase is an exciting player and it is very exciting news for all St George Illawarra fans that he will be remaining with our Club until at least the end of 2010," said Doust. "Chase was identified early as a local junior who would have a big future and we can all look forward to watching his continued development.

"The way he has handled the transition to NRL football has been great, especially given that he has combined this with his final year of school."

Dragons Coach Nathan Brown was equally as pleased to have extended Stanley's contract with the Club.

"Chase has definitely got a big future ahead of him if he continues to keep working hard and applying himself as he has done this year," said Brown. "Our plan at the start of the year was to play him in Premier League but he really impressed us in the off-season when he joined the fulltime squad after Christmas.

"His efforts in the pre-season combined with some early season injuries gave him his opportunity in the NRL where he has been outstanding, especially considering his age and the fact he is still at school,"
added Brown.
