DISCORD #10: Four Nations worries, Steve Price, Bizzare Quotes & NRL's Most Popular
Wed June 17, 2009
by Steve Mascord
I THINK it's time we started to get very, very worried about the Four Nations.

I have never been so hopeful about being wrong but France's 66-12 defeat to England on Saturday suggests some very painful results for everyone who cares about rugby league this October and November.

England coach Tony Smith even said after the flogging he would like some stiffer opposition to pit his side against and renewed calls to intoduce an Other Nationalities side.

But stiffer oppostion for what? So they can beat France by more at the end of the year? One thing is for certain, if the results do more damage than good for the game in France, the RLIF will only have itself to blame. Les Chanticleers finished last in the World Cup, Ireland finished fifth and yet there was not talk at all of the paddies getting the nod for the Four Nations?

Why not? Next time the tournament goes to the northern hemisphere, let's make sure there is a transparent a fair qualification process - which, to be fair, we are going to see in the southern hemisphere in October.

I am told we are close to getting a multi-national sponsor for the Four Nations, by the way.

----------

STEVE Price told an interesting story when I interviewed him last Thursday for Rugby League Week: the boy who first convinced Steve to play rugby league has only just been released from jail after 17 years behind bars.

Price writes in his biography, Be Your Best, about how he almost quit the game before he started in 1983 because he wasn't allowed to play in the same team at Toowoomba club Newtown as his mate, who was a school classmate but 12 months older.

"The boys who were in the older group found themselves in a bit of trouble - a few of them ended up in jail,'' Price wrote.

Price tells Discord: "The guy I'm talking about, he just got out of jail. He's been in jail for, like 17 years, for all sorts of different things.

"To start with it was break-and-enter, holding up a service station or something, then he broke out of jail, then he got re-caught. All sorts of things kept him in there for that long.

"That's just the decisions you make, environments you are put in, that change the course of your life.

"I was lucky enough to be with some guys who were good footy players and they didn't have the same tendancies as those guys did. They were a wild crew. You have those guys in every footy club.''

Price wonders if he might have ended up in similar strife had be been allowed to play footy with his mate that day 26 years ago.

"I don't know whether I would or I wouldn't have,'' he says "I probably wouldn't have because I'm not that sort of person. Mum wouldn't have allowed me to do that.

"But I mightn't be playing footy now because of that. She would have just said 'it's not a place to be'.''

Not a bad little human interest angle in Origin week.

----------

SOME pretty bizarre media conference utterances by coaches have gone unreported recently.

Speaking after the Newcastle-Bulldogs game, Knights coach Brian Smith said of talented youngster Tim Natusch: "It's not very often you acuse a kiwi of being quick-thinking - especially if he's a front rower - but it was a lovely piece of play''.

Then last Saturday, Melbourne's Craig Bellamy offered this gem when asked about concussed lock Dallas Johnson - who had a head clash with not one but two defenders in a sickening "pinball'' incident: "It would have nice for him to have broken jaw and miss Origin''. Storm captain and Queensland hooker Cameron Smith - sitting alongside Bellamy - looked startled at the comment.

----------

PETER "the Mad Butcher" Leitch did his best for Women In League Weekend last Friday by having a young female relative hand out gifts to all the ladies at his always-colourful pre-match function. The Butcher even had Andrew Johns - at Mt Smart Stadium for Channel Nine - on stage for little interview. But Womens Weekend or not, the Butcher wasn't toning down his inimitable style, "Andrew,'' he said over the PA, "I thought your brother got totally fucked over!"

----------

READER Ferrett asked last week about player refusing to sign the standard playing contract because they disagree with some of the stipulations. The fact is that the standard playing contract does not dictate that players not drink or engage in group sex. It speaks about behaviour in very general terms, such as not bringing the game into disrepute. Few players would say "I'm not signing that - I intend to bring the game into disrepute every chance I get!"

Smith set to join elite group at Storm
Sun April 19, 2009
by Matthew O'Neill
Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith is poised to become just the fourth player at the club to achieve the 150 game milestone.

The 25-year-old will join club greats Matt Geyer (262 games), Scott Hill (177) and Robbie Kearns (169), in reaching the milestone when he leads the Storm out on to Leichhardt Oval in Monday night's National Rugby League clash against Wests Tigers.

Smith made his first grade debut in 2003 when he took over the hooker position from Richard Swain, who served the Storm so brilliantly from 1998 to 2002.

It didn't take Smith long to make an impression appearing in the final State of Origin match of the season, which the Maroons won 36-6 to avoid a series whitewash. Smith has appeared in every match for Queensland since his debut taking his tally up to 16 and in 2008 captained the Maroons to a series victory.

Smith made his Australian debut in 2006 with Danny Buderus having a mortgage on the Australian jumper and Smith missed out on a Test debut in 2005 when Buderus was out injured and the selectors opted for Luke Priddis in the one-off Test against New Zealand. Smith got his chance when Buderus was unavailable for the Tri-Nations and after that he shut the door on Buderus reclaiming the Test jumper. Smith captained Australia for the first time in 2007 and has led the Kangaroos on three occasions.

The Storm had a leadership rotation until late in the 2006 season when coach Craig Bellamy opted to make Smith the sole captain and in 2007 he led Melbourne to Grand Final success against Manly, but unfortunately for Smith missed the 2008 decider when he was suspended during the Finals series.

Smith has made his mark as one of the great hookers of the modern era along with Buderus and ranks up there alongside former champion hookers Steve Walters, Ben Elias, Max Krilich, George Peponis, Elwyn Walters, Ken Kearney, Noel Kelly and many more.

Marking Smith on Monday night will be Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah, who at this stage is slight favourite to win the NSW hooker position ahead of the Bulldogs Michael Ennis. A big performance by Farah against Smith will most certainly enhance the claims of Farah.
