Four Knights in the Blues
Tue May 15, 2007
Source: www.newcastleknights.com.au

Jarrod Mullen headlines a list of four Newcastle Knights selected in the New South Wales team for next week's State of Origin series opener at Suncorp Stadium.

The former Australian Schoolboy and New South Wales Under 19s representative has been at the centre of selection speculation for the last three weeks but says he didn't rate himself a chance when he wasn't picked for Country Origin.

"I honestly thought selectors weren't interested," Mullen said.

"There's been a lot of talk over the last few weeks but I've been ignoring it to focus on my job with the Knights.

"Since Joey retired we've been busy planning for the future and there's a lot of experienced half backs running around that I thought would be picked ahead of me.

"This is a dream come true. It's the reason young blokes play football."

The Newcastle half back will be joined by his club and state captain Danny Buderus, Knights back rower, Steve Simpson and in-form Newcastle fullback, Kurt Gidley who has been pressuring selectors all season with constant "man of the match" performances.

The Prime Ministers XIII and Country Origin representative says he's still coming to terms with his selection.

"I've seen my brother and other team mates head into camp and always hoped one day I would get my chance but nothing prepared me for this," Gidley said.

"I had a taste of Origin football two years ago when Phil Gould selected me as 18th man but to be named in the top 17 is unbelievable."

The four former Newcastle juniors make up one of the greatest representative contributions in the club's 20 year history and will join their Origin team mates in camp tomorrow morning.

Leadership group for Knights
Tue February 27, 2007
Source: www.newcastleknights.com.au

Newcastle Coach, Brian Smith has announced a five-man leadership group for the Knights 20th Crusade.

Prime Ministers XIII representatives, Adam Woolnough and Jarrod Mullen will join senior players, Danny Buderus, Steve Simpson and Andrew Johns to form the five-person group.

"They'll be responsible for a range of leadership issues, including liaising with referees and management and communicating regularly with their team mates," said Brian Smith.

Former International, Andrew Johns will be team captain.

"The team captaincy issue was resolved after talking to Andrew about what he hopes to achieve out of the season," Smith said.

Johns said: "The way the captaincy has been structured will take a lot of the pressure off me.

"Steve and Danny in particular will share a lot of the leadership responsibilities allowing me to concentrate on leading the team on the field.

"It's ultimately the coach's call and Brian wanted me to be Captain."

Smith added: "Something seemed wrong about the idea of having the world's best player and organiser not captain of the football team."

Smith said Woolnough and Mullen's selection follows a successful trial in Darwin last weekend.

"Their leadership qualities became obvious in the Top End by the way they carried themselves both on and off the field."

Meanwhile, Johns has been named for this weekend's trial against the Sharks in Cessnock.

Brian Smith will trial an extended squad for the Newcastle Knights final hit out before the season proper begins on March 18 against the Bulldogs.

Supporters travelling to Cessnock are urged to pre-purchase tickets. While Baddley Park has an 8,000 capacity, there are only two ticket windows available.

Tickets can be purchased from the Knights Kingdom Supporters Store at EnergyAustralia Stadium or the Cessnock Supporters Club.
