Source: www.northsydneybears.com.auFormer North Sydney captain, player and Vice-President the late George Green, has been honoured in Sydney this week with the creation of the 'George Green Medal'.
The honour this year was awarded to Souths young halfback Chris Sandow in it's inaugural year.
George Green (born 17 December, 1883 in Grafton, New South Wales) was the first indigenous player to compete in first grade rugby league in Australia. A utility forward, Green came to the North Sydney club in 1918 and played out the remainder of his top-grade career with the Club. In 1919 Green captained the North Sydney club and was a vice-captain with the Club's two premiership winning seasons - 1921 and 1922.
George Green was described as a crowd favourite, a whole-hearted player who often came up with an important play at vital times in a match. Both on and off the field Green is described as being a gentleman.
But George Green's contribution to the Club went further than his football skills and manner.
When George Green joined Norths he was put in charge of reawakening interest in rugby league in the North Sydney district. Among other things he instituted advanced training techniques consisting of lectures embellished with blackboard illustrations of skills and strategies.
George Green is also credited with being responsible for electric lighting coming to North Sydney Oval, convincing the club committee that more than moonlight was needed for his new style of training.
Following his retirement from the major rugby league competition in Australia, Green spent time coaching the Cessnock club in rural NSW. He made his debut in Rugby League playing for the Eastern Suburbs club in 1908 season. He played in the Eastern suburbs side in 1911, the year that club won their first premiership.
"Rugby League has been part of the social fabric of Indigenous communities across NSW and Queensland," The Honourable Linda Burney, Minister for Fair Trading, Minister for Youth and Minister for Volunteering said.
"This recognition of young achievers coming through the game will give further inspiration to the youth who aspire to emulate their heroes
"The NRL has also sent a positive message to Indigenous youth by combining this award with an educational scholarship
"It reinforces that to be successful in any field of life you need to have a sound education and the game has set new standards in its Toyota Cup by ensuring players have the opportunity to work or study."

Bulldogs whiz kid Ben Barba holds a very comfortable lead as top point scorer and top scorer with two rounds to play in the first Toyota Cup season.
Barba had four weeks in first grade opening the door for his rivals to run him down and both Josh Dugan (Raiders) and Kevin Locke (Warriors) have racked up many points in the last month, but it looks like that Barba will hold firm until at least the Finals. Dugan's average of points per game is very similar to Barba's and he has been a major presence for the Raiders when he has been on the field. Barba returned last week for the Bulldogs where he scored one try and landed two goals for a total of eight points.
So far 11 players have racked up over 100 points this season with Souths providing two players - Eddie Paea and Chris Sandow. The latter is odds on favourite to take out the Peter Moore NRL Rookie of the Year award for his performances in the Rabbitohs revival in the second half of the season.
Brisbane's Jharal Yow Yeh became the second player to pass 20 tries for the season and despite playing three more games than Barba is still seven tries behind him.
Dugan, Barba and Locke are all in a tight race to see who finishes up as the leading goal kicker with Dugan leading Barba by one goal with Locke a further goal behind.
Sandow is poised to take out a unique double as being the most accurate goal kicker in the NRL and NYC competitions (minimum 10 goals). Sandow's strike rate in the NRL is 90% (18/20) and his NYC strike rate before promotion stood at 84% (47/56).
Ten players have landed drop goals this season in the Toyota Cup with Warriors Isaac John and Manly's Daly Cherry-Evans leading the way with three each.
