Source: www.raiders.com.auThe CFMEU Canberra Raiders have continued to sure up their local talent, after exciting back row forward Joe Picker announced today he would be remaining in green until the end of 2011.
Picker, 20 who was named Raiders rookie of the year in 2007, has had a rapid rise through the grades at Canberra and was elevated to representative honour's recently when he traveled to Papua New Guinea to play for the Prime Ministers XIII.
Originally from Bigga in NSW, Picker said he always wanted to make sure he had the chance to remain in Canberra and said he was looking forward to some exciting times with the Green Machine.
"The Raiders have been great to me and gave me the chance to play first grade so I'm really happy that I can stay here for another three years," Picker said. "I think we're a team on the rise and next year we can improve even more on our efforts this year."
Raiders CEO Don Furner said Picker was high priority for re-signing by the club and said it continued the Raiders policy on identifying junior talent and bringing them through the system.
"Joe has shown this year what a talented prospect he is and obviously other people see it too after he was selected in the Prime Ministers XIII," Furner said. "He is also another product of our strong junior development program and it's always great for us when we can keep a local junior in Canberra."
Furner said Picker was originally contracted until the end of 2009, but his form warranted an early contract extension.
"We always knew Joe would be a first grade player of the future and he's always been in our plans for the future," he said. "We wanted to make sure we locked him away before any other clubs had the chance of trying to get him."
Furner said he was also working through the re-signing of Joe's younger brothers Michael and Ben.

Source: www.raiders.com.auSecond row forwards Nigel Plum and Joe Picker will make their 2008 season debuts for the Canberra Raiders on Saturday afternoon against the Penrith Panthers, after Glen Turner and Neville Costigan were ruled out today through injury.
Marshall Chalk has been elevated to the starting line-up for the injured Turner, who is set to miss between 4-6 weeks with an ankle injury, while Nigel Plum replaces the injured Neville Costigan, who will miss between 6-8 weeks after re-injuring his quad on Saturday night against the Knights.
With Chalk's elevation to the starting line-up Joe Picker comes onto the Raiders bench, with tough forward Trevor Thurling being named as 18th man for the Green Machine.
Raiders Coach Neil Henry said although the loss of Turner and Costigan was significant, he was confident both Plum and Picker would fit nicely into the squad.
"We have some depth in the back row and Marshall Chalk was pretty good when he was there last week, and Nigel Plum comes back from a shoulder reconstruction so he's fit and raring to go," Henry said.
"Joe Picker is also in the back ground ready to go from the bench. We have a little bit of depth which you would hope at the start of the year and hopefully we don't get any more injuries."After injuring his ribs on Saturday night Lincoln Withers will train with the team tomorrow to prove his fitness, while in some good news for the Raiders, Scott Logan has been cleared of any serious knee damage and will take his spot in the starting line-up.
Withers said he's confident of being fit for the match, and will test it out in training later this week.
"It's a bit painful still but I'll train this week and consult the medical staff and go from there," Withers said.
"Its one of those injuries where you have to put up with the pain factor and I'll have to check it out with the doctor and then talk to Neil."William Zillman will undergo tests later in the week after suffering concussion against the Knights, but is expected to take his place at fullback against the Panthers.
