Peacock scoops Rhinos top award
Wed September 10, 2008

England captain Jamie Peacock has been named Leeds Rhinos Player of the Year for 2008 at a glittering awards ceremony at the Queens Hotel in Leeds on Monday night.

Peacock, who joined the Rhinos in 2006 from rivals Bradford Bulls, pipped New Zealand full back Brent Webb and fellow England team mate Rob Burrow to the top award. The annual awards, in association with Network Securities UK and Gala Casinos, also saw prop Luke Burgess named as the YEP Shooting Star as the club's most promising young player.

Commenting on the night Peacock said, "This is a real honour. Growing up as a kid and watching Leeds as a fan in the South Stand all I ever dreamt of was just seeing my name up on the scoreboard so to be awarded the club's Player of the Year is unbelievable. I think I am playing the best rugby of my career now and this is a great group of players to be part of. Brian McClennan has come in this year and you can see his passion for the club every day. That gets the players excited about their job and we all want to achieve great things together."

It was also an emotional night for four players who are leaving the World Champions at the end of the season. Academy products Nick Scruton and Ben Kaye were given a warm round of applause as they move on to pastures new in the engage Super League whilst there was a special presentation to Clinton Toopi and Gareth Ellis as they head to the southern hemisphere for next season.

The Gillette Academy Player of the Year was young full back Tom Bush whilst Ben Jones-Bishop made it a double for the number 1 shirt picking up the Chris Sanderson Memorial Trophy as Reserve Academy Player of the Year.

The Cravendale Commitment to the Community Award was shared for the first time with Ian Kirke and Simon Worrall receiving the award from the Leeds Rugby Foundation's General Manager Chris Rostron. Chris himself was the worthy recipient of the Clubman of the Year Award for his outstanding commitment and service to the club.

Scott Donald picked up the Leeds Building Society Try of the Season award after polling 77% of the vote for his try against Hull FC at Headingley Carnegie beating efforts by Rob Burrow and Luke Burgess, both against Bradford.

Commenting on the night Head Coach Brian McClennan said, "I would like to congratulate all the winners on their awards, they are all richly deserved. This was a special night for us as a club and a chance to recognise some outstanding efforts. We have still got some work to do this season, and we are looking forward to that challenge, but events like this remind us how special our club is."

Peacock takes up coaching reigns
Fri June 13, 2008

Great Britain captain Jamie Peacock is set to take the first steps on the coaching ladder after being appointed to look after some of the brightest young prospects at the Rhinos.

Rhinos Head of Youth Development John Bastian has made the Great Britain captain Jamie Peacock the latest member of the Rhinos squad to join the growing ranks of young coaches in the club's system.

For the 2009 season, Peacock will follow the lead set by his club and country team mate Jamie Jones-Buchanan by coaching the club's Year 11 Foundation Academy team as part of the newly named Gold Development programme. The Foundation Academy is a chance for outstanding youngsters to show their worth and try earn themselves a professional contract with the World Champions and they could have no better role model than Peacock.

Bastian commented, "Jamie has got a wealth of experience as a player but this will give him a chance to gain experience as a coach as well, working at the grassroots of our club which will stand our young players in good stead for the long future hopefully ahead for them. Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Jamie Peacock are both passionate about grassroots rugby in and around Leeds, as has been seen by their coaching at their old amateur club at Stanningley and we want to harness that enthusiasm. They can have a huge impact on the lives of the next generation of players coming through at the Rhinos and in their development as players and people," added Bastian.

However, it is not just the first team players who will be benefiting from this exercise, Bastian believes having two current Great Britain internationals as your coaches can only benefit the young people.

"For the twelve selected players in the Year 11 Foundation Academy side next season this is a very exciting time to be involved at Leeds Rhinos. They will be very fortunate to be coached by two current internationals who are Champions with the club and who have come up through the game from the amateur ranks.

"The Gold Development Programme will give the next generation of junior a high performance introduction to the culture, standard and skills we set for young men who want to play and represent this great club at the highest level. They will be given game specific individual attention to improve and develop in all areas. Young player that have this opportunity have an added incentive of working alongside two Great Britain internationals and that is priceless," added Bastian.
