Burt and Nightingale lead the way after NRL Round 15
Wed June 25, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Parramatta's Luke Burt holds a slender one-point lead at the top as the NRL's leading point scorer after 15 rounds of action.

Burt scored six points during the Eels narrow loss against against, but it was enough to edge him back in front of Brett Hodgson, who scored 10 points in the Tigers loss against Brisbane on Friday night. Burt currently has 115 points with Hodgson on 114. Cronulla's Luke Covell became the 3rd player this season to pass the century with eight points during the Sharks victory on Sunday.

Scott Prince will have to wait another week to pass the century as he'll be unavailable for the Titans due to Queensland selection, but Matt Orford who is also on 99 points will have a great opportunity on Saturday night when Manly take on Newcastle.

Dragons winger Jason Nightingale is still in front as leading try scorer with 12 with powerful Roosters winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall one behind with 11 tries following a double against the Knights on Sunday. Kenny-Dowall will have a great opportunity on Friday night to add more to his tally as the Roosters take on the tackle shy Bulldogs. Denan Kemp joined the double figures barrier for tries after scoring for the Broncos against Wests Tigers on Friday night.

Orford and Hodgson have both landed 45 goals this season with Burt on 43 and Prince 41.

Hazem El Masri has proved to be accurate with his goal kicking this season missing four shots from 30 attempts. Michael Witt has kicked at 84% and Johnathan Thurston 83% despite both players missing two goals on Sunday. Brett Hodgson is also sitting at a healthy 83%.

Prince and Jamie Soward landed their first drop goals of the season in Round 15 action. Soward's resulted in a one-point win for the Dragons and Prince's put the Titans in front until Souths received a controversial late penalty to deny the Gold Coast victory. Jarrod Sammut, Jarrod Mullen, Cooper Cronk and Brett Kimmorley all have two drop-goals, although a missed attempt by Kimmorley on Sunday ended up resulting in a Sharks penalty that gave them victory.

Kiwis name three newcomers and two British based players
Wed April 30, 2008
by NZRL
Three players yet to make their debuts have been included in a 19-man Pirtek Kiwis squad for the Centenary Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on May 9.

In line to play their first test are South Sydney hooker Issac Luke, St George Illawarra winger Jason Nightingale and Sydney Roosters utility Setaimata Sa.

Hawera-born Luke (20) graduates to the Kiwi squad after making his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs last June while Sydney-born Nightingale (21), whose parents are New Zealanders, first appeared at first-grade level last May. He has scored five tries in seven matches for the Dragons this season and 12 in 23 matches in all.

Sa (20), who hails from Christchurch, had his first taste of NRL football for the Roosters on Anzac Day 2006. Sa and Luke are both former Junior Kiwis.

While Luke, Nightingale and Sa are all new to the squad, several recent Kiwis have been recalled including 16-test fullback Brent Webb (Leeds), who missed all six tests last year. The only other player named from an English Super League club is Wigan halfback Thomas Leuluai, used in last year's series against Great Britain and in the one-off test against France in Paris.

Centre Iosia Soliola, prop Nathan Cayless, loose forward David Fa'alogo and second rower Sonny Bill Williams are all back in the side after last appearing in the Kiwi jersey in the 2007 Anzac Test.

Melbourne prop Adam Blair is back after playing four times in the 2006 Tri Nations campaign but missing much of last season through injury.

Apart from Leuluai, other players retained from last year's tour to Britain and France are Roy Asotasi (South Sydney), Dene Halatau (Wests Tigers), Lance Hohaia (Warriors), Simon Mannering (Warriors), Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters), Frank Pritchard (Penrith), Ben Roberts (Bulldogs) and Jeremy Smith (Melbourne). Joining them is South Sydney veteran David Kidwell, who left the tour early for personal reasons.

Asotasi will again captain the Pirtek Kiwis after leading them in each of their six tests in 2007. The playing line-up will be confirmed when the team assembles in Sydney next week.
