Adrian Morley named Warrington captain
Thu January 17, 2008
Source: www.warringtonwolves.com

Great Britain international and Wolves forward, Adrian Morley has been handed the Wolves captaincy for the 2008 season. The 30- year old former Eccles Junior takes over the captaincy from Lee Briers, who has decided to step down from the role after five years as team captain.

Morley brings a wealth of experience to the captain's role, with a career that has seen him win a NRL Grand Final at Sydney Roosters and a Super League crown with Bradford Bulls in 2005. As well as a decorated international career that has seen the 6ft 3 forward appear in 30 Great Britain tests.

"It's a real honour to captain the side. It's something that I'm really looking forward to," stated Morley.

"Paul Cullen pulled me aside last week and said he wanted to take some pressure off Lee Briers and asked if I would like to take up the role? I didn't think twice about it, I'm excited to take up the challenge."

The honour of vice captain has been awarded to Wolves' number 9, Jon Clarke. Clarke has been stalwart of the club since 2001 and over the last year has developed into a fully-fledged international, helping Great Britain to a test series win over New Zealand. 'I'm proud to get the call to be vice- captain, it's a big step up for me, Mozza is captain but I'm there to support him in his role' enthused Clarke.

Clarke, who was recently awarded a new four year contract that came on the back of winning the first international honours of his career with Great Britain this autumn, is delighted to be given the opportunity:

"It's been a good 12 months for me, personally, on the back of a not great season for Warrington. But with that said, I won't rest on my laurels, I want a better year and a bigger year with Warrington in 2008."

Head Coach Paul Cullen felt once Lee Briers had decided to step down from the role, Adrian Morley was the man to fill the void:

"It was an obvious choice. His seniority and his international record was a major factor in my decision process. He has all the right attributes: the way he lives his life, his attitude at training and his attitude on the field is simply first class."

Lee Briers has captained the Wolves with distinction since he took the role from Matt Rodwell in 2002. However, Both Briers and Cullen felt moving in to engage Super League XIII that now was the time for change:

"I felt going forward that we needed to take the pressure off Briers, both on and off the field, and relive him of the pressure of responsibility for everything we do on the field coming from him," confirmed Cullen.

"The bottom line is I want him to turn up for work with a smile on his face to play football, and have the responsibility for that and that only."

Paul Cullen and his squad fly out to Lanzarote today, Thursday, for a week's intensive training at their pre-season warm weather camp. Only Chris Hicks and Louis Anderson will miss the trip as both their respective partners are due to give birth to their first-born children.

Junior Academy prop Adam Neal, 17, is included in the squad for Lanzarote after impressing in the Wolves Pre Season fixtures.

NZRL appalled by no action taken over Morley tackle
Wed October 24, 2007
by NZRL
New Zealand Rugby League chairman Andrew Chalmers today accused the Rugby Football League of ignoring player welfare after it failed to take any action against Great Britain prop Adrian Morley over a high tackle charge.

Playing for the Northern Union, Morley was put on report by referee Ashley Klein after collecting All Golds forward Awen Guttenbeil with a high shot in last Saturday night's commemorative clash in Warrington.

But he escaped any potential penalty when a three-man panel convened by the RFL made a split decision not to refer his case to a judicial hearing. NZRL board member and former test referee Neville Kesha was on the panel.

"But Neville he had no chance," said Chalmers.

"He was out-voted by the other two locals and Morley didn't have to go before a hearing at all.

"It's a disgrace. There were two tackles in that match which would have incurred suspensions in the NRL, one on Awen Guttenbeil and the other on Nigel Vagana.

"The one on Nigel wasn't even put forward for consideration and Morley's effort was pushed under the carpet despite Neville believing it was serious enough to warrant a suspension of between four and six weeks.

"It's clear the RFL has little interest in player health and welfare if it allows such tackles to go unpunished."

Chalmers said he was furious a player with a judicial record as poor as Morley's should escape.

"He was a repeat offender in his time in the NRL and he has a history of offending throughout his career in England," he said.

"The Kiwis have just come out of a test match where Steve Matai was ordered off and then suspended for two games for a tackle on Australian Mark Gasnier. There were no questions asked - he was sent off and then handed a ban as well.

"Now the Kiwis come to the United Kingdom and a player with a dreadful record for high tackles gets away unpunished.

"This decision should be reviewed whatever the regulations are. The judicial system in place in this country is laughable if this is the way it works.

"Someone should have to answer for this. Morley should not be able to play in the first test against the Kiwis on Saturday and there would be an argument that he shouldn't be able to appear in the next two tests either.

"The referee did the right thing in putting the tackle on report but the system has taken no regard of player welfare in the aftermath.

"Does that now give Morley carte blanch to go around aiming as high as he likes throughout this series? You'd have to think so."

Chalmers said he had aired his views with the RFL but had no confidence it would review its stance on Morley.

"They have no concept of what is right and proper. After all, they see nothing wrong in allowing a maniac like Morley to operate with a search and destroy mentality."
