Bradford confirm Menzies signing

Bradford Bulls have today announced that Australian Legend Steve Menzies will join the club on a one year contract for the 2009 engage Super League season.

Menzies, who can play in a variety of positions, has made 339 appearances make him the second highest appearance maker and he is also second in the all time Try scorers list in Australia with 171. He also holds both the highest appearances and most tries for a forward. He has made twenty appearances for New South Wales in State of Origin games and holds fifteen Test Caps.

Steve Menzies is excited about joining the Bulls:

"It's going to be a great experience for me. I have always wanted to play over in the UK and when the opportunity came along to do that with Bradford - one of the strongest clubs - I grabbed it and I am now looking forward to getting over there and being a part of the club. I want to come over and win trophies with the Bulls and Steve McNamara and hopefully I can lend a little experience and knowledge to help us do that.

"I am really looking forward to seeing some of the quality juniors at the club and I know one of my roles will be to help them progress. It's one I am really looking forward to and I will be delighted to help them in any way I can and give them any advice they need. The basic skills are the same in both hemisphere but I am a big believer that players must bond together if a team is to go well in the competition and I have had big raps on the Bulls from a lot of players in the British game."

Bulls Coach Steve McNamara feels Menzies will be a massive asset to the club:

"I am absolutely delighted with the capture of Steve Menzies from Manly. He is at the opposite end of the scale as regards to age but he is as young and enthusiastic as the four youngsters we have just re-signed. He is an absolute legend of the game in Australia, a proven winner who, despite his age, is still playing week in and week out for the top side in the NRL Competition, putting in outstanding performances and he will be huge asset for this organisation both on and off the field and certainly with regards to the young players who will undoubtedly learn from his experience.

"Steve is a quality signing and a really exciting capture. He has achieved so much in the game and is a true great who offers so much. He's obviously a legendary try-scorer but also a mean defender, totally dedicated, professional and mentally tough. We need those sorts of people at Bradford and I'm thrilled Steve has decided to join us here for next year."

Menzies to join Bradford in 2009

Discussions between Manly coach Des Hasler and Bradford coach Steve McNamara have played a major role in the legendary forward Steve Menzies joining the English Super League club on a one year deal for the 2009 season.

Menzies announced today that he will end his classic 16 season career at the Sea Eagles at the end of the current season.

"I will always love Manly and I will never play against them," Menzies told a packed media conference at the club's Sydney Academy of Sport headquarters.

"I have thought about this decision for a long time. My decision to finish my career in England is one I made after consulting family, friends and some ex team mates playing in England.

"I would like to have played with Manly forever but that isn't possible and I know I can play at least one more season and that will be with the Bradford club," Menzies said.

Menzies will play his 339th game for Manly tomorrow night at his beloved Brookvale Oval against arch rivals Parramatta. It was at the same ground he debuted in first grade on June 26, 1993 against the Brisbane Broncos under the coaching of Manly legend Bob Fulton.

"Brookvale is the ground that will remain in my heart forever. It was at the ground that I first watched Manly play sitting on the hill with my gran pop Mackie Campbell.

"He played in Manly's first side in 1947 so I am proud to carry on the family tradition at Manly. I dreamed of playing with Manly from the time I was six years of age and to play for so long is amazing.

"I suppose I will realise what I have achieved when I retire but the northern beaches is where I will live immediately my period with Bradford is over.

"Hopefully one day I can return in some capacity and work under Des Hasler who is heading towards being a great coach in the game," Menzies said.

Coach Hasler said Bradford would get tremendous value out of having Steve Menzies for a season.

"He is a wonderful human being and is value on and off the field. In discussions with Bradford they were always aware of Beaver's iconic standing in the game," Hasler said.

Bradford have beaten off other English Super League clubs Salford, Castleford,London Harlequins and the Cardiff Celtics. Glamour club Wigan also expressed an interest.

Steve Menzies has etched a name in Rugby League history in his 338 games (second all time to Terry Lamb 349) and has scored 171 tries (second all time to Ken Irvine (212). He played 20 games for NSW in State of Origin and 15 Tests for Australia. If Manly repeat last year and make the grand final he will equal Lamb's record.
