Storm re-sign youngster Manu
Wed July 9, 2008

Melbourne Storm has secured the immediate future of another of their young stars with backrower Sika Manu signing a two-year contract extension that will see him remain at the club until the end of 2010.

The re-signing of Manu is yet another of the Storm's younger brigade to have committed to the club in recent months, and Storm head coach Craig Bellamy couldn't be happier that he has.

"We think Sika has tremendous potential to be a quality first-grade player and we're very glad he's decided to stay with us for the next couple of years," said Bellamy.

"He's made some big steps this year breaking into our first-grade side and we're thrilled he's going to fulfil that potential he has with us.

"He's been in our system since he was a young boy and to see him develop the way he has is a real credit to him and we're delighted he'll be pulling on the Storm jersey for the foreseeable future."

Manu joins recent re-signings Jeff Lima, Aiden Tolman and Adam Blair as players who are considered the future of the club.

Established first-grade star and Queensland State-of-Origin representative Dallas Johnson also committed his immediate future to the Storm when he extended his contract earlier in the season.

Manu has taken the next step in 2008, establishing himself as a regular in the Storm line-up each week having played 12 of a possible 15 games.

He came off the bench against the Raiders on Sunday, scoring a terrific try from a Cooper Cronk kick.

"I've started playing regular first-grade this year in Melbourne and I want to continue to develop further here under Craig Bellamy and the other coaching staff," said Manu.

"I've been in the Storm system for quite a few years now and I felt this was the best place for me to become the best footballer I can be.

"Apart from footballing reasons, I've forged some really close friendships here and I'm very happy here in Melbourne so there was no need for me to go elsewhere to play my football."

While he hasn't played for the Kiwis yet, the New Zealander couldn't be plying his trade in better surroundings considering Storm assistant coach Stephen Kearney is also the coach of his national team.

And with a World Cup at the end of the season his chance to represent his country may be not too far away.

"While he could have gone elsewhere for more money, the chance to train and play with Stephen around probably had a lot to do with his decision to stay," said Bellamy.

"And we believe, given his talent, that he could definitely be a Kiwi international sooner rather than later."
