South Sydney have announced that centre Colin Best will join the Rabbitohs for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, with the Club also re-signing young back-rowers Shannan McPherson and Ben Lowe for 2009 and 2010.

Best, 29, is currently playing with the Canberra Raiders, having previously had stints at the Cronulla Sharks, Hull FC and St George Illawarra Dragons. Best represented City Origin in 2001 and has played in six NRL finals series with both the Sharks and the Dragons. Best has over 150 first grade games to his name in the NRL.

McPherson, 22, is a South Sydney junior from the South Eastern Seagulls, progressing through the South Sydney junior representative teams to make his first grade debut in 2005. McPherson has become a regular first grader with South Sydney over the past 12 months, playing in eight of the Rabbitohs' 12 games so far this season.

Lowe, a 23 year old back-rower, made his NRL debut in round two this season, and has gone on to play six first grade games, scoring two tries.

"We're very pleased to be bringing someone to the Club with Colin's experience and strike power," Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said.

"Colin has been one of the Raiders' best players over the past couple of years and his experience in finals football will be invaluable to the young players we have coming through the ranks at the moment.

"His ability to play centre or wing will give us some flexibility out wide as well.

"It's also wonderful to see another South Sydney junior showing his allegiance to his junior club, as Shannan has done today.

"He will join other Souths juniors such as Nathan Merritt, John Sutton, Fetuli Talanoa and Craig Wing on extended contracts with the Rabbitohs."

Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said the signing of Ben Lowe will further bolster the Rabbitohs squad for the next two seasons.

"Ben has shown he has what it takes to make it in the NRL and we're very pleased to have him with us for the next two seasons," Mr Richardson said.

"He is a young, mobile forward and he has a very bright future in our game. We're looking forward to seeing him develop further in a Rabbitohs jersey over the next two years."

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have one of the richest histories in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the then 8000 Members of the Club. The Rabbitohs made the semi-finals for the first time in 18 years in 2007, and have strengthened their season ticketed Membership to over 6,500 with over 12,000 total members in 2008.
