Hunt snares hat-trick as Broncos beat Eels 40-8
Fri April 24, 2009
Source: www.parraeels.com.au

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have fallen to an outstanding Brisbane Broncos outfit 40 points to 8 in their round seven Telstra Premiership clash at Suncorp Stadium.

The Broncos scored seven tries to the Eels two, with Karmichael Hunt finishing with a hat trick of four pointers.

Darren Lockyer was also in outstanding form, playing a leading hand in five of his side's tries in front of an appreciative home town crowd of 30,887.

The Eels found themselves under instant pressure after a dropped ball on the first tackle of the match, and the Broncos responded by going over on the next set through prop Joel Clinton. However video referee Russell Smith denied the home side after replays showed Etu Uaisele had been taken out by dummy runner Ashton Sims.

The Eels then went the length of the field, Jarryd Hayne closing out their first full set by soaring to claim a Feleti Mateo bomb only to drop the ball with the line beckoning.

The match showed no signs of slowing and the Broncos opened their account on their next trip down the park, Justin Hodges carrying two defenders over the line to score.

Corey Parker converted from the sideline for an early 6-nil lead.

The Eels were next to fall foul of the video referee, Luke Burt touching down wide out after a 70 metre counter attack only for Smith to rule he'd pushed Hodges in the back just before scoring.

Soon after Hunt stretched the Broncos lead, the fullback scoring for Parker to convert for a 12-nil scoreline after 20 minutes.

Mistakes continued to hurt the Eels, with a first tackle turnover leading to a Broncos try to winger Antonio Winterstein.

The Eels finished the half in the ascendency without being able to convert any of their chances, the visitors reaching the Broncos in goal on no less than four occasions without reward before the break.

A Nick Kenny try to start the second half only exacerbated the Eels pain, with Parker's conversion making it 22-nil to the Broncos.

However the Eels would soon get the boost they were searching for with Uaisele - in his debut NRL appearance - neatly taking a Kris Keating cross field kick to score out wide.

Two minutes later they went in again, Taulima Tautai finishing off a movement that began when Mateo slipped a neat offload on halfway. Mateo's pass found Jeff Robson, who handed on to Tautai who did well to touch down out wide.

Burt was unable to convert either try, however the Eels were off the mark at 22-8.

The Broncos soon regained the composure and were out to a 28-8 lead when Hunt went in for his second try.

He got his third seven minutes from time, while Israel Folau also got his name on the score sheet before full time to bring up 40 for the home side.

The Eels next match comes in seven days time with a home clash against North Queensland at Parramatta Stadium.

Broncos Withdraw Hunt Offer
Tue March 17, 2009
Source: www.broncos.com.au

The Brisbane Broncos would like to advise that they have today withdrawn their contract offer to Karmichael Hunt.

Broncos' chief executive Bruno Cullen said the Broncos were very comfortable with the offer that was made, but unfortunately are not in a position to wait any longer as Karmichael and his management pursue other options.

"The time frames were not suitable to either the Brisbane Broncos or Karmichael's management and as a club we have had to withdraw the offer and move on," said Cullen.

"I must stress that this does not mean that the Broncos do not want to retain Karmichael Hunt.

"What it means is the club will now go about securing our roster for 2010 and the future, which may or may not include Karmichael Hunt."
