Ellis ruled out for three weeks
Fri April 18, 2008
Source: www.leedsrugby.com

Great Britain international Gareth Ellis has been ruled out for three weeks after x-rays revealed he had broken his thumb in two places.

Ellis suffered the injury against Wigan a fortnight ago but played throughout that game and was in the Rhinos side last week to face Warrington before limping off with an ankle injury.

After meeting with the medical staff this week to assess his ankle, Ellis mentioned that his thumb was also painful and immediate scans revealed the extent of the injury.

Ellis commented, "In Rugby League you get bangs on your thumb all the time, its part and parcel of the game, it was painful but nothing too bad but then it started to get worse so I mentioned it to the club doctor. He sent me for a scan straight away which showed up a double fracture."

Ellis would have missed this tonight's clash with Celtic Crusaders in the Carnegie Challenge Cup but he is now set to miss the following two weeks as well including the Millennium Magic clash with rivals Bradford Bulls on the 3rd May at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Rhinos confirm Ellis departure to Wests Tigers
Fri February 8, 2008
Source: www.leedsrugby.com

engage Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos have today confirmed that Great Britain international Gareth Ellis, 26, will join Australian NRL side Wests Tigers for the 2009 season.

Ellis, who joined the Rhinos in 2005 from Wakefield, is in the last year of his contract and has decided to take the opportunity to play in Australia at the peak of his career.

Ellis won the Carnegie World Club Challenge with the Rhinos in 2005 and was an integral part of the Championship winning side in 2007. He will also be part of the Rhinos team that takes on reigning NRL Champions Melbourne Storm at Elland Road on Friday 29th February at Elland Road, Leeds.

Commenting on his decision the Great Britain international said, "This has been a life-changing decision based on my personal career goals to play at the elite level in both Super League in the UK and the NRL Down Under, complemented by International honours.

"Leaving Leeds Rhinos will be a massive wrench and my focus for the rest of the 2008 season will be a massive year for me. I want to help my team mates and coaches achieve the Club's objectives of winning the Carnegie World Club Challenge, the Carnegie Challenge Cup and the Grand Final. Then, hopefully, to receive the invitation to play a part in England's bid to lift the World Cup in Australia in the autumn.

"Only after that will my attentions to my personal challenge to prove myself in the NRL with Wests Tigers, who have impressed me with their ambition to repeat their Grand Final success of 2005.

"Because of the significance of a major new three-year contract, the Rhinos and interested clubs Down Under wanted an early decision. If the opportunity to test myself in the NRL had not arose, I would have had no hesitation in agreeing a new contract with the Rhinos and I never considered joining another club in Super League. However, my partner Rachael and I, plus our respective families, are excited by the prospects of a change of lifestyle, coupled with my personal challenge on the field, especially at this stage of my rugby career from 2009," added Ellis.

Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive Gary Hetherington added, "We are obviously disappointed to be losing a key member of our squad but we fully understand Gareth's desire to fulfil his lifetime ambition to play in the NRL and when he leaves he will do so with our best wishes. However, the contract with Wests is of course for next year and we will be looking to recruit a top quality replacement for 2009 throughout this year," added Hetherington.

Head Coach Brian McClennan commented, "I have been talking with Gareth and I know that he is 100% committed to the Rhinos for the rest of the season, as we all are. He has been a fantastic player for Leeds during his time here and I am sure he will want to have his best season yet in 2008."

Ellis has made 93 appearances for the Rhinos since 2005 and was the club's Player of the Year in 2006. He has been capped 17 times for Great Britain and was last year named in the International Team of the Year having started the last 11 Tests for the Lions.
