Barba continues Toyota Cup domination after Round 14

Bulldogs talent Ben Barba is currently being ignored for first grade selection, but continues to lead the way in the Toyota Cup as leading point scorer and try scorer after 14 rounds of action.

In recent weeks the Toyota Cup has seen Russell Packer, Chris Sandow, Luke Capewell, Josh Hoffman, Tony Williams and Justin Carney among others promoted into NRL squads, whereas the Toyota Cup's leading player continues to break records without NRL recognition.

Barba leads Penrith's fullback Lachlan Coote by 13 points as leading point scorer and Coote is only an injury or a form slump for Rhys Wesser in obtaining an NRL position. The 3rd highest point scorer is boom Souths talent Chris Sandow, who appears set to remain on 118 points at Toyota Cup level after dominating in his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs two weeks ago.

Both Barba and Coote are placed in the top three for the points, tries and goals.

Canberra's Josh Dugan returned after being out of action for five weeks with a contribution of 20 points from two tries and eight goals against the Broncos to become the 4th player after Barba, Coote and Sandow to pass the 100 point barrier. Dugan holds the highest average of points per game in the Toyota Cup and it's only a matter of time before he is promoted to the Raiders NRL side.

Justin Carney rounds up 3rd position as the leading try scorer in the Toyota Cup and his good form for the Raiders won him selection in their NRL squad where he scored two tries on debut against the Broncos last Sunday. Wests Tigers Coedi Towney is the only other player aside from Barba, Coote and Carney to be in the double figures for tries with 10 this season.

Sandow is still the Toyota Cup's leading goal kicker with 47 successful attempts, which is eight ahead of Barba with Coote on 35 and Dugan 34.

Goal kicking has been kind to the Titans this season with Kayne Lawton missing only one goal from 22 attempts and Jordan Rapana is yet to miss from 11 shots.

Parramatta's Daniel Mortimer and Manly's Daly Cherry-Evans are the only two players to land two drop goals this season. Both Mortimer and Cherry-Evans have been outstanding for their clubs this season and only the good form of Brett Finch and Matt Orford is preventing them from further honours at their Clubs.

Barba plays halfback, five-eighth and fullback for the Bulldogs. They are three positions the Bulldogs are struggling in due to injury to regular custodian Luke Patten and the form of their halves this season has been disappointing to say the least. How much more does Barba have to dominate before he gets his NRL opportunity?
