Carvell signs then asks for release

Hull FC's Great Britain international prop Garreth Carvell agreed and signed a new three year contract with the club for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

However, Carvell suddenly changed his mind and 24 hours later verbally requested he be released from his new contract. The club subsequently received the request in writing.

Chief executive James Rule said: "Garreth Carvell signed a new three year contract for 2009, 2010 and 2011 with us.

"However, the following day he informed the club that he had a change of mind and wished to be released from that contract.

"This is a substantial contract that reflected the value of Garreth to the club. It also provided an opportunity for Garreth to play into his Testimonial year.

"We are surprised and disappointed by Garreth's change of heart and both parties are now seeking to work out a viable solution to the situation."

Head Coach Richard Agar added: "It is a massive disappointment for us.

"However, when talking of contracts of this magnitude I feel their has to be an element of players wanting to play for a club.

"Hopefully we will find a solution to the situation but in the meantime I have no doubts that Garreth will honour his present contract to the best of his ability.

"We have an important semi final coming up and I have no problem working with him.

"I know one of Garreth's goals this season is to make the World Cup squad and I am therefore confident he will play to the best of his ability to make the squad."

Carvell included in Hull squad for Rhinos clash
Wed September 5, 2007

Prop Garreth Carvell has been included in Hull's 20-man squad for Friday night's game against Leeds Rhinos at Carnegie Headingley (8pm).

Carvell aggravated a groin injury against Wakefield and missed last weekend's derby defeat.

His rehabilitation is going well and the former Rhinos player revealed: "I'm not doing all this work to miss out against Leeds. Hopefully, I should be fit for Friday, that's the plan."

Another former Rhino, prop Ewan Dowes is hoping to be fit as well after picking up a quad injury against Hull KR.

Dowes is having a scan later today, and said: "I am just keeping my fingers crossed it is nothing serious because I desperately want to play in this one, especially after last weekend."

HULL FC 20-man squad: Briscoe, Carvell, Dowes, Godwin, Hall, Head, R Horne, G Horne, King, Lee, Manu, Maiava, Tony, Tickle, Radford, Raynor, Washbrook, Wheeldon, Whiting, Yeaman.

Meanwhile, physio Simon Pope has signed a new three year deal with the club, and revealed: "I'm delighted."

Rugby League convert, Pope is now in his fourth year with Hull FC, and added: "Committing myself for a further three years was a very easy decision to make.

"I'm settled here, I like it, we're recruiting well and I am confident more success will follow."

A former physio with soccer clubs Chelsea, Fulham, Oldham and Barnsley, Pope admits Rugby League is now his game, and added: "Yes, I will admit I am a Rugby League convert.

"After Shaun McRae brought me to the club it didn't take me long to start to enjoy the game and convert. It is an outstanding game and tremendous entertainment."

Having Pope on board for another three years is a big bonus for Hull as he is regarded as one of the top in the business.

Chief executive James Rule said: "Simon is an invaluable asset to our football department. He has managed our injuries magnificently during his time at the club and repeatedly sends them back into the main squad in excellent physical condition.

"To have secured his services for another three years is a key part of our long term planning."
