Vodafone Warriors utility Patrick Ah Van has been added to the train-on squad to prepare for the Junior Kiwis' one-off test against the Junior Kangaroos in Wellington on October 14.
Ah Van (19) has the most NRL experience of the players named in the squad.
He made 12 first-grade appearances for the Vodafone Warriors this year, lifting his career total to 27 since making his debut in 2006.
This will be the first time since 2001 that the two countries have played a junior international at the under-19 age group level. More recently these have been under-18 fixtures.
The match will be the curtain-raiser to the Centenary Test between the Kiwis and the Kangaroos.
The full train-on squad is: Leeson Ah Mau (Warriors), Patrick Ah Van (Warriors), Kingi Apula (Gold Coast), Sonny Fai (Warriors), Liam Foran (Melbourne), Alex Green (Burleigh Bears), Scott Jones (Warriors), Shaun Kenny-Dowall (Sydney Roosters), Meli Koliavu (Wellington), Iosefa Masada (Penrith), Howie Matthews (Warriors), Russell Packer (Warriors), Eddie Paea (South Sydney), Matt Parata (Bulldogs), Joseph Paulo (Penrith), Eddie Pettybourne (South Sydney), Upu Poching (Warriors), Kevin Proctor (Melbourne), Eddie Purcell (Warriors), Sam Stewart junior (Newcastle), A J Taumata (Sydney City), Taulima Tautai (Parramatta), Tony Williams (Parramatta).
ISSUED ON BEHALF OF NEW ZEALAND RUGBY LEAGUE
Tue May 1, 2007
Source: www.warriors.co.nzVodafone Warriors utility Patrick Ah Van will make his first NRL appearance of the year at fullback against Cronulla at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night.
The 19-year-old was today brought into the side to replace suspended first-choice fullback Wade McKinnon.
McKinnon will miss the Vodafone Warriors' next two matches after entering an early guilty plea on a grade three contrary conduct charge arising from Sunday's dramatic 18-16 win against South Sydney. The offence related to McKinnon coming into contact with referee Jason Robinson.
After making a delayed start to the season following off-season shoulder surgery, Ah Van has played three games at fullback for the Vodafone Auckland Lions in the New South Wales Premier League.
He also played fullback twice in his 15 appearances for the Vodafone Warriors in his rookie season in 2006.
It's the only change to the side that came back from 8-16 down to beat Souths with two tries in the last three minutes of Sunday's clash, McKinnon igniting the comeback with his 60-metre try from a Steve Price off load.
The Vodafone Warriors will face a Cronulla side which was beaten 20-16 by the Newcastle Knights last night. Several Sharks players will also be involved in the annual City Origin-Country Origin match in Coffs Harbour on Thursday night as well as making the trip to Auckland.
"That won't make it any easier for us, though," said Vodafone Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary.
"The Sharks have played some really good football this year and have shown how strong they are defensively. We have to get our minds back on the job after what happened on Sunday."The last time the two sides met was at Mt Smart Stadium last August, the home side winning 12-10 in a match that marked veteran Awen Guttenbeil's testimonial season.
The Vodafone Warriors go into this match on the back of successive wins against North Queensland and now South Sydney, the second one a rare success after having a bye.
Those results have seen the club hold onto fourth spot for three weeks running. In recent weeks the Vodafone Warriors have played four sides sitting above them on the ladder, losing to Melbourne and Manly but beating North Queensland and South Sydney.
The record of four wins from the first six matches of the year is equal with the start the club made in 2002 and has been bettered only by the five wins-one loss beginning in 2003.
Saturday night's match will be hooker Nathan Fien's 50th for the Vodafone Warriors since joining the club in 2005.
