Lowes stakes claim after Wolves defeat Hull KR

Warrington Wolves caretaker boss James Lowes staked his claim to take the job on a permanent basis after he masterminded a 38-20 victory over Hull KR in their engage Super League clash at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The Wolves followed up their victory over Harlequins RL last weekend with what was eventually a comfortable win.

Hull KR pushed the home side all the way but the Wolves pulled away after half time when three tries in quick succession gave them a 20-point lead.

Warrington dominated the opening exchanges and opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute after a good break from Chris Riley down the right flank.

The Wolves probed away at the Rovers defence before a Lee Briers pass sent second row Ben Westwood crashing over for the opening score and Chris Hicks added the extras.

There was still evidence of a slight hangover following Hull KR's 52-10 defeat at St Helens last week.

And Warrington took advantage by pegging the visitors back and looked composed on the ball with stand-off Briers allowed to control the game.

But a Rovers response came in the 15th minute when a long floated pass allowed Peter Fox to break the Wolves ranks.

The right wing sprinted clear and found loose forward Chris Chester, who made no mistake from close range on the inside and Paul Cooke duly converted.

The away side went ahead three minutes later when they gambled on the short side.

Daniel Fitzhenry hit the gap and managed to find hooker Ben Fisher, who despite stumbling slightly, picked himself up to cross the line. But Cooke failed with his conversion attempt.

Warrington applied the pressure and pulled level in the 21st minute when fast hands and a long pass from scrum-half Michael Monaghan allowed Martin Gleeson to dive over in the corner for his sixth try of the season but Hicks failed to convert.

Rovers regained the lead on the half-hour mark when Briers put pressure on the home defence with a failed 40-20.

Rovers used the ball well and full back Shaun Briscoe ducked under centre Simon Grix to touchdown, but Cooke's poor kicking continued and he was once more off target.

The hosts levelled things up just before the break when substitute Ben Harrison got on the end of a Monaghan pass to make another good period of possession count. Hicks' conversion gave the Wolves a half-time lead of 16-14.

Warrington soaked up some early Rovers pressure after the break before forcing themselves up the opposite end of the field.

Good play from Harrison sent Paul Rauhihi clean through and despite still having plenty to do the prop beat off two Rovers defenders before scoring a 49th minute effort under the posts.

And only three minutes later they increased their advantage when Riley made it back-to-back tries for the hosts and Hicks converted.

Briers added another score in the 52nd minute following a good break from Monaghan and then romped the length of the field in the closing stages to cap a fine second-half display for the Wolves. Fox added another at the death but the game was all but sealed.
