Mon March 31, 2008 Source: www.warriors.co.nzThe Vodafone Junior Warriors scored twice in the last nine minutes to beat Manly 22-14 tonight and secure their first victory in the new National Youth Competition (NYC). The Tony Iro-coached side was right in contention to win its first two matches before losing 22-32 to Melbourne and 22-26 to Parramatta. But tonight at Brookvale Oval they stayed in the grind to finish with an impressive and important win in this third round clash. After leading 12-10 at halftime through tries to fullback Howie Matthews and winger Thomas Ah Van - both converted by Matthews - the Vodafone Junior Warriors conceded a try to Manly second rower Kenny Edwards, falling 12-14 behind. That's the way the score was as the contest went into the final 10 minutes but then the Vodafone Junior Warriors found another gear. A towering bomb was dropped by Manly fullback Rhys Wollaghan, centre Elijah Taylor racing through to collect the loose ball for a go-ahead try, which Matthews again converted. And three minutes from time, good hands gave Ah Van an overlap to run in his second try wide out on the left. Matthews couldn't convert but the Vodafone Junior Warriors had earned the right to belt out their team song in the dressing room for the first time. Match details: At Brookvale Oval, Manly: Manly Sea Eagles 14 (John Grey, Rhys Woolaghan, Kenny Edwards tries; Dale Cherry-Evans conversions). Vodafone Junior Warriors 22 (Thomas Ah Van 2, Howie Matthews, Elijah Taylor tries; Howie Matthews 3 conversions). Halftime: 12-10 Vodafone Junior Warriors. Referee: Phil Haines.
