Eels lose to Rabbitohs
Sat July 12, 2008
Source: www.parraeels.com.au

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have suffered their second successive NRL loss, leading early before losing to South Sydney by 32 points to 20 at ANZ Stadium.

The Eels scored the first two tries but could only manage four to the Rabbitohs six for the match, the home side cantering away to their fifth win in a row.

The early signs were good for Parramatta, who started with none of the lethargy that plagued them during last week's loss to Penrith, and on the back of simple mistake free play they opened their account through a 10th minute try to Mark Riddell.

Running from dummy half on tackle two of a repeat set Riddell forced his way over, getting the nod from video referee Paul Simpkins on the way to an early 6-nil lead.

Attacking the fringes the Eels would soon stretch their lead to 10 points with Jarryd Hayne scoring his side's second try in four minutes.

It came as a result of a brilliant offload from Nathan Hindmarsh, who put Krisnan Inu into space down the left hand touch line. Inu was pulled down on the thirty and from the next play a Feleti Mateo cross field kick fell into the waiting arms of Hayne who scored in the corner.

Beau Champion got on the end of a Nathan Merritt break to score the Rabbitohs first try 17 minutes in, the centre carrying Joel Reddy and Luke Burt on his back to reduce the Eels lead to 10-4.

The Champion try stole the Eels momentum and Souths responded by dominating possession, finishing with 58% of the ball in the first half.

They also went into the sheds in front, with Champion's centre partner Jamie Simpson ensuring the Rabbitohs got maximum benefit, getting a contentious benefit of the doubt call from Simpkins on a 29th minute try.

Isaac Luke's conversion evened the scores at 10-apiece.

The Rabbitohs had their confidence up and would ensure the pain continued for the Eels, with Simpson again doing the damage, scoring down the right hand side to put them out to a 16-10 lead on the run into half time.

The Eels returned renewed after the break and would even it up soon after the resumption through a converted try to Krisnan Inu.

They then sustained a serious blow with Feleti Mateo limping from the field with what appeared to be a knee injury.

The Rabbitohs were given a leg up on the way to scoring next, a stripping penalty 35 metres from the Eels line turned into six points when replacement Shannan McPherson barreled his way over the line.

Mateo's return with just under 20 minutes to go had little to no effect with Shannon Hegarty touching down wide out to give Souths a decisive 26-16 lead 18 minutes from full time.

Joel Reddy appeared to have given the Eels a sniff eight minutes from time when he reached out to plant the ball on the line, only for video referee Simpkins to rightly rule the Ball had touched the corner post before the tryline.

Luke made it all academic on the next set however, scoring a relatively soft try ? Souths' sixth ? to secure the victory at 32-16.

The loss will Eels next match is on Friday night against Manly at Brookvale Oval.
