Source: www.broncos.com.auA gallant WOW Brisbane Broncos have narrowly beaten the Wests Tigers 19-18 in a thriller at Suncorp Stadium.
In a match filled with emotion following the death of league legend Dick "Tosser" Turner, man of the match Bronco Michael Ennis along with fullback Karmichael Hunt steered their side to a tight victory.
Broncos coach Wayne Bennett said the two competition points were well earned by his under strength team tonight.
"They gutsed it out and I can't deny them that," said Bennett.
"We were never going to win pretty tonight.
"We had a good start to the season but we're not behind the eight ball that much, there is still a lot of football in front of us."
Trailing 12-8 at half-time, Broncos winger Denan Kemp scored in the 50th minute on the back of a 50-metre bust from prop David Taylor.
Ennis added the extras from out wide to give the Broncos a 14-12 lead.
Nick Kenny then stretched over the try line in the 52nd minute to extend the Broncos lead to 18-12.
Ennis missed an opportunity to further the Broncos lead when he steered a penalty attempt wide in the 58th minute.
Tigers centre Dean Collis broke the line in the 65th minute before kicking the ball centre-field for team-mate Liam Fulton who crossed next to the sticks.
Hodgson converted the try to level the game at 18-all.
Bronco Nick Emmett (pictured) then missed an opportunity to give his side the lead when he was held up in goal in the 72nd minute.
Hunt gave the Broncos a 19-18 lead when he slotted a field goal from 25 metres with five minutes remaining.
Origin star Darius Boyd then made a crucial mistake when he knocked on from dummy half deep in the Broncos territory, but the Tigers failed to capitalise with the ball.
In the dying minutes, Tiger John Morris missed a crucial field goal opportunity to level the match.
Earlier in the match, the Tigers opened the scoring in the 5th minute after Chris Heighington broke three tackles to put fullback Brett Hodgson over the try line.
The Broncos brought the score back to 6-2 in the 9th minute when Ennis converted a penalty from close range.
Fill-in halfback Joel Moon then gave the Broncos an 8-6 lead in the 17th minute when he found a hole in the Tigers defence, allowing Ennis to slot his second goal.
Kemp almost extended the Broncos lead in the 27th minute when he was narrowly tackled into touch.
Minutes later, Broncos utility PJ Marsh made a try-saving tackle on winger Shannon McDonnell who couldn't get an offload away.
Hodgson then levelled the score at 8-all in the 35th minute when he converted an easy penalty.
But Tigers lock Dene Halatau gave his side a 12-8 lead at half-time when he crossed after the siren, following a long pass from Matthew Head.
BRISBANE BRONCOS 19 (J Moon, N Kenny, N Emmett tries; M Ennis 3 goals; K Hunt field goal) defeated WESTS TIGERS 18 (B Hodgson, D Halatau, L Fulton tries; B Hodgson 3 goals) at Suncorp Stadium.
