Source: www.warriors.co.nzCronulla converted a halftime deficit into a 16-point win in its 14th-round NRL clash against the Vodafone Warriors at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.
With Jerome Ropati scoring his 31st first-grade try, the Vodafone Warriors had a narrow 8-6 advantage at halftime.
They showed marked improvement in their defence after last week's performance against South Sydney.
With an excellent completion rate and just five errors to Cronulla's 12, the Vodafone Warriors missed only eight tackles in the opening half (Cronulla had 23 misses) and didn't concede one line break.
And they also had only 13 missed tackles in the second spell, reducing the Sharks to going about their try-scoring business through kicks.
They had success with it, too, as David Simmons followed up his first half try with another while Luke Covell and Ben Pomeroy also benefited through kicks.
While that helped to give Cronulla a 24-8 victory, the stats showed the home side was able to make just one line break against the Vodafone Warriors who, just a week earlier, had allowed South Sydney eight line breaks.
But on attack the Vodafone Warriors couldn't add to the Ropati try as the Sharks produced 16 unanswered points.
With their spoiling approach, the Sharks consistently stifle opposition attacks and they were on song again this time.
The win was Cronulla's ninth of the season, lifting it to a five-way share of the lead on 20 points but fifth on differential.
While the Vodafone Warriors were left to reflect on their eighth loss of the season, there were encouraging signs.
Not the least was captain Steve Price backing up from Wednesday night's State of Origin appearance with a heavy workload.
After only three games behind him following his long injury lay-off, Price was very much back in the metre-eating mood that drove him to the club's player of the year title last year - and the year before. Carrying the ball 21 times in the 61 minutes he played, Price made 199 metres.
And second rower Ben Matulino also impressed as he became the club's 142nd first-grade player.
