Wests Tigers out class Cowboys
Mon June 9, 2008

Wests Tigers recorded a 40-16 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys at Campbelltown Sports Stadium in round 13 of the Telstra Premiership.

In front of a crowd of 10,488, Wests Tigers scored seven tries to three to move to 16 competition points. Wests Tigers remain in the top eight.

Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the fifth minute when a nice crossfield kick by half-back Mathew Head saw centre Dean Collis leap high to take the ball to score out wide.

Full-back and captain Brett Hodgson swung the ball in between the posts for a 6-0 lead.

North Queensland Cowboys half-back Travis Burns was placed on report for a high shot on winger Taniela Tuiaki in the ninth minute. Tuiaki was taken off the field for medical treatment with Beau Ryan coming on.

Wests Tigers showed some razzle dazzle in the lead-up to a try to winger Shannon McDonnell in the 11th minute.

A pass by hooker Robbie Farah to centre Dean Collis saw him juggle the ball before recapturing it. Collis passed the ball inside to Hodgson who turned the ball back inside for McDonnell to dive over.

Hodgson missed the conversion attempt for a 10-0 lead.

Referee Gavin Badger placed Burns on report for a second time when he uplifted centre Chris Lawrence in a driving tackle. The home town crowd was left stunned as to why he wasn't sent off.

Wests Tigers jumped to a 14-0 lead when Head ran with the ball, faked to pass, and then bounced off a Cowboys defender to dive over the tryline in the 24th minute.

Hodgson converted the try for a 16-0 lead.

It became 20-0 when a break by Hodgson saw him beat two defenders before kicking ahead. The ball bounced off a Cowboys player and into the arms of second-rower Ben Te'o to score.

Hodgson converted the try for a 22-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

Video referee Graeme West awarded a try to debutant Nick Slyney after he crashed over under the posts. West ruled he grounded the ball cleanly despite losing control of it.

Winger John Williams converted the try to leave the Cowboys trailing 22-6 three minutes before half-time.

West was again called on in the final minute before half-time to rule on a try to Ryan after a crossfield kick by John Morris. It followed some fancy passing by Wests Tigers and came on the back of two consecutive penalties.

West ruled no try and awarded a penalty for obstruction in the lead-up.

The score remained 22-6 at half-time.

2ND Half

The Cowboys capitalised on a wealth of possession through penalties to score out wide through winger Ty Williams in the 45th minute for a 22-10 scoreline.

Williams' conversion attempt hit the left upright.

West was called on in the 47th minute to rule a possibly try to Williams but awarded no try after Hodgson lost the ball over the line in a three man tackle.

Wests Tigers went to a 26-10 lead when a grubber kick by Head behind the defense saw Williams and Anthony Watts collide for second-rower Chris Heighington to dive on the ball to score.

Hodgson hooked the ball in from out wide for a 28-10 lead after 52 minutes.

Wests Tigers were denied a try to Collis in the 54th minute with Badger ruling a forward pass. The play before, Marshall produced his trademark step in a sign to the delight of the crowd.

Sixteen minutes before half-time, the Cowboys hit back with a try near the posts to centre Ben Harris. Williams converted for a 28-16 scoreline.

Five minutes later, a good short ball by Farah saw Marshall hit a gap to step past two defenders to score out wide. Hodgson converted the try for a 34-16 scoreline with nine minutes remaining.

Wests Tigers scored one of the tries of the year to Hodgson two minutes before full-time. It started when Morris took an intercept off his own tryline, raced 50 metres downfield to find support in Marshall.

Marshall gave the ball back to Morris who found support in McDonnell. Marshall then received the ball from McDonnell to send the ball wide for Hodgson to race 15 metres to finish off a length of the field try.

Hodgson converted the try for a 40-16 victory.
