Source: www.parraeels.com.auThe Pirtek Parramatta Eels have suffered a heartbreaking 30-26 loss to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos scoring after the bell to snatch victory.
The Eels led until midway through the second half, when a Darren Lockyer inspired comeback saw the Broncos turn an 18-10 deficit into a 26-18 lead.
But the Eels hit back through two tries to Krisnan Inu and appeared to have sent the match into golden point when Broncos winger Denan Kemp - for the fourth time in the match - found the tryline with the siren sounding to secure the home side the win.
Lockyer was a late inclusion at five eighth for the Broncos, the Queensland and Australian skipper called up on the morning of the match following his recovery from a knee injury.
But his return did nothing to help the Broncos early, the Eels running in two quick tries to lead by 10 points after as many minutes.
The first came on the back of a 50 metre break to Weller Hauraki and repeat sets following a well placed Brett Finch grubber.
On the second consecutive set the Eels struck, Feleti Mateo dancing through the line to score midway between the posts and the left touchline.
Luke Burt added the extras and the Eels were ahead 6 points to nil.
Four minutes later the visitors extended their lead, Joel Reddy touching down for his seventh try of the year after back to back second man plays down the Broncos left edge.
Down 10-nil after a missed conversion from Burt the Broncos provided the perfect counterpunch, Karmichael Hunt kicking in behind the retreating Eels defence for Kemp to score his first out wide.
Michael Ennis' conversion attempt was unsuccessful however the Broncos were in the contest at 10-4.
The match was not lacking in spice, Jarryd Hayne placed on report by referee Jason Robinson for a lifting tackle on Tonie Carroll in the 19th minute.
Two minutes later Justin Hodges suffered the same fate after depositing Mark Riddell on his head after the Eels hooker had passed the ball.
Riddell was immediately replaced by Matt Keating but would return late in the half after assessment from Parramatta medical staff.
Burt extended the Eels lead with a 23rd minute penalty goal, however the Broncos continued to build pressure inside the opposition 20 and it eventually told with Hodges showing great strength to score out wide, narrowing the Eels lead to 12-8.
Ennis was unsuccessful with his second tough shot for the night, but would soon make up for the miss by converting a penalty from in front to send the teams into the break with the Eels ahead 12 points to 10.
A scintillating 50 metre burst from Fuifui Moimoi saw the Eels get the best possible start to the second half, the big prop passing off to Brendan Oake who in turn handed Burt an unimpeded run to the line.
Burt converted from in front and the Eels were ahead 18-10.
Referee Robinson then put Oake on report after an apparent elbow on Kemp just before sending Burt away to score.
Kemp showed no ill effects from the strike, ensuring the Broncos remained in touch by scoring his second try for the match just minutes later.
Ennis converted from the sideline to make it a two point game once again, then evened it up with a 40 metre penalty to make it 18-all with 26 minutes left on the clock.
Lockyer was introduced back into the match with 19 minutes remaining and immediately he made his presence felt, gifting the Broncos repeat sets with a beautifully weighted kick into the Eels in goal.
Four tackles later the Broncos hit the lead for the first time in the match, Hunt firing a cut out to put Kemp over in the corner for his third try.
With their spirits up the Broncos flung it wide again and this time found space down the right, David Stagg finishing off a fine movement by scoring out wide for an eight point lead.
The Eels were far from dead and it was now the turn of the other comeback kid, Krisnan Inu, to take centre stage.
Eight minutes from full time the Kiwi international - playing his first match since an ankle injury in round one - soared high to take the ball above Reece Robinson and score in the corner.
Three minutes later he was in again - this time off a sensational chip and chase from Mateo - to level the scores at 26 apiece.
Both tries went unconverted and the match appeared bound for golden point extra time.
However the Broncos, Lockyer and Kemp were not done and with the siren sounding in the background the skipper kicked in behind the defence, sending Kemp on his way to the tryline for a club record equaling fourth try for the match.
The touch down brought down the curtain on an unforgettable match, the Broncos winning 30 points to 26.
The Eels next match is back at Parramatta Stadium against the Canberra Raiders next Saturday night.

Source: www.broncos.com.auDarren Lockyer has been cleared to play in tonight's NRL match at Suncorp Stadium and will suit up against the Parramatta Eels.
Lockyer has run the past two days, and an intensive training session with the team yesterday has convinced medical staff he is ready to go.
The Bronco captain consulted with club physiotherapy staff this morning and reported no associated soreness in his knee.
Lockyer's inclusion means David Taylor will be 18th man for the match that begins at 7.45pm.
