Source: www.sharks.com.auIn a match played in difficult conditions at Toyota Stadium on a cold and wet Saturday night, the Sharks have prevailed in wining a tough encounter over the Brisbane Broncos by 13 to 6.
Running into a stiff head breeze in the first 40-mintes the Sharks continually repelled the Brisbane attack, before a more even share of both field position and possession saw them control the game for most of the second half.
Despite being down 6 to 4 at half time, Sharks coach Ricky Stuart was pleased with the Sharks effort and was confident they could get the result in the second stanza.
"I told them at half time there defence in that first half would win the game for them in the second half," Stuart said. "If they came out with the same attitude, after defending there line as well as they did, they would come out on top."
A smart try to Brett Kearney off a set move from a scrum put the Sharks in front, with a Brett Kimmorley field goal five minutes from full time sealed the win and the two competition points.
It was a scrappy affair early with neither side able to assert any dominance, with the first score of the match not coming until the 18th minute and it would be the visitors to go ahead.
After a couple of sets on the Sharks line a grubber kick from hooker Micheal Ennis found open space, with veteran Tonie Carroll pouncing on the loose ball for a Brisbane try.
Ennis converted and the Broncos led 6-0.
With the rain getting heavier and the Broncos kicking intelligently with the wind at their backs the Sharks were forced to defend grimly for long periods of the first half however after weathering the storm until the stroke of half time it would be the Sharks who would strike back.
On the end of a solid set of six tackles a long cut out pass from Brett Kimmorley put Misi Taulapapa into some space with the Sharks winger showing good determination to touch down wide out. Covell was wide with his kick into the teeth of the wind but the Sharks had bridged the gap to go to the break behind 6-4.
Now with the advantage of the breeze the Sharks began the second half much better than the first and on the back of a penalty for a play the ball infringement were able to draw level in the 48th minute through the boot of Covell.
Playing with a renewed enthusiasm the Sharks kept the pressure on the Broncos and after a scrum near their opponents line the patented inside ball move to fullback Kearney again worked a treat, with the Sharks number one scooting 10-metres to score.
Covell kicked the extras and the Sharks led 12-6 after 53 minutes of the match had elapsed.
With the wind and rain abating somewhat both teams threw a little more attack at each other but the defences held firm and the match was well and truly in the balance until the Sharks worked for field position on the back of a penalty. After pushing one wide just minutes earlier it was a Kimmorley field goal from in front and 15 metres out, which would seal the result.
The Sharks had a number of strong performers on the night, none better than Brett Seymour at five eighth, Kimmorley inside him at half back, Luke Douglas in the forwards and Misi Taulapapa on the wing.
Also impressive for the Sharks was hooker Isaac De Gois, who made a number on inroads into the Broncos defence with his dummy half running, while new recruit Terrence Seu Seu lifted his side with a couple of huge tackles.
The Sharks move to 14 competition points as a result of the win and consolidate their position in the top four.
The next assignment for the Sharks will be a Monday night match against the Bulldogs and ANZ Stadium.
