Source: www.raiders.com.auThe CFMEU Canberra Raiders' season is back on track, after a spirited 38-10 demolition of the cellar dwelling South Sydney Rabbitohs at a cold Canberra Stadium last night.
After two losses on the road, the Raiders turned their season around and showed there is no place like Canberra Stadium for the green machine, during their seven tries to two drubbing of the Rabbitohs.
Joel Monaghan bagged his second try-scoring double for the season, while Todd Carney's controlled kicking game showed why he was a state of origin possibility only weeks ago.
The home team got off to a flying start, when the Raiders' two country origin stars - Carney and Monaghan - combined for the first try in just the first minute of play. Carney's blind side kick found space between Souths' fullback and winger, but somehow the pair could only spill the ball into the path of Monaghan who picked up the ball and planted it over the line to give his side an early lead.
The first minute try was a sign of things to come for the Raiders. They scored four first half tries to lead 24-6 at the break, before running in another three in the second half.
Canberra captain Alan Tongue - starting at hooker for the first time this season - was named man of the match for an all-round complete performance, including an unusual try assist - a chip and chase.
Raiders' coach Neil Henry praised the club's depth, after the Raiders' recent run of injuries - including today's late withdrawal of prop Troy Thompson. He heads back into the Queensland state of origin camp tomorrow happy with his club side's discipline and point-scoring ability.
South Sydney's coach Jason Taylor said his team gifted the Raiders too much possession and were forced to tackle themselves out of the contest.
CANBERRA RAIDERS 38 (Joel Monaghan 2, Glen Turner, Trevor Thurling, Terry Campese, Adrian Purtell, Bronx Goodwin tries; Todd Carney 5 goals) d. SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS 10 (Beau Champion, Dean Widders tries; Isaac Luke goal) at Canberra Stadium.

Source: www.raiders.com.auThe CFMEU Canberra Raiders will have another NRL debutant ready for action this week, with Queanbeyan native Cy Lasscock named in the squad to take on the South Sydney on Monday night at Canberra Stadium.
Lasscock has been in great form for the Raiders feeder club the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup, and his selection is just reward for the hard work he's been putting in each week this season.
His inclusion in the Raiders squad is one of five changes for the Raiders, from the side which was beaten 30-4 by the Roosters on Saturday night.
Lasscock said he's looking forward to the possibility of making his debut, and would be fired up in front of his home crowd if he plays on Monday night.
"I didn't think it would come this early but I'll be ready on Monday if I get a chance," Lasscock said. "I've been playing some good footy for Souths Logan so I think I'm ready for it."
With Neil Henry away on Origin duty for Queensland David Furner gets his chance to fill in the top role for the week, but said he wouldn't change too much in the teams lead up.
"Obviously with Neil away I get to do the media commitments and a few other loose ends but I wouldn't say it was the head coach role," Furner said. "Last year myself and Mick Crawley did the same job when Neil was away so we'll do the same again this week."
Injuries to Lincoln Withers (knee) and Marshall Chalk (thumb) has seen a reshuffle of the Raiders pack, with skipper Alan Tongue moving from lock to hooker, while Glen Turner returns to the Raiders back row with Joe Picker shifted to lock.
In a huge blow for the Raiders, Withers will miss the remainder of the season joining Phil Graham and William Zillman in recovery for the remainder of 2008, while Chalk is expected to be out for between 6-8 weeks.
On the wing Brett Kelly has been replaced by David Milne, while Dane Tilse will join Kelly in turning out for Souths Logan this weekend.
The Raiders bench has another new face as well with Glen Buttriss named on the bench to back up Tongue at hooker, while Neville Costigan has been named as 18th man with a decision on his fitness to be made later in the week.
