Carney shines as Raiders down Tigers
Mon April 14, 2008
Source: www.raiders.com.au

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders walked away with the inaugural 1989 league Legends Cup yesterday, with a come from behind 30-24 win over the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium.

The Raiders didn't have a lead in the game until halfback Todd Carney ran 70m to score under the black dot in the 73rd minute. Carney converted his own try to put the Raiders in front 26-24.

Five minutes later, three-try hero Adrian Purtell sealed the deal for the Raiders.

Picking up the ball on his own try line, the right-side winger looked up and saw nothing but grass. He sprinted the length of the field before crashing over the line. He was embraced by his team mates, in scenes reminiscent of the 1989 grand final.

The Wests Tigers lead 24-10 at half time, but the Raiders held them scoreless for the second period. It is the third time the Raiders have kept their opposition pointless in the second half this season alone.

Raiders' coach Neil Henry once again praised the character of his players, while Tigers' coach Tim Sheens was left ruing his team's missed opportunity to collect the two competition points.

Raiders launch Heritage Jersey
Sat April 12, 2008

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will wear their heritage jersey this weekend, for their historical clash with the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium.

On top of remembering the 1989 grand final between Canberra and Balmain, the Raiders will also play in their traditional strip for the first time in the centenary season as they reflect to on their roots in the NRL.

The design is a combination of the early Raiders strips, and incorporates the clubs original version of the Viking Logo, the clubs original lime green colour, and the white trim from the early years in the competition.

Even the CFMEU logo has been revamped for the more retro feel, with the logo being portrayed similar to the famous Woodger's logo from the clubs maiden premiership in 1989.

Wearing the jumper for the first time today were Raiders Todd Carney and Lincoln Withers, with both players keen to run out onto their home turf on Sunday in their traditional strips.

"Its great for the all of the teams in the competition to recognise where they came from and it's a great looking jersey," Withers said. "Hopefully we can do the famous jumper proud against the Tigers on Sunday."

Todd Carney said to be a part of the centenary season is a special honour, and he'll be making sure he tries even harder this weekend.

"There's no doubt 2008 is a big year in the NRL and to be involved is great," Carney said. "You always lift for big matches and Sunday is shaping up to be quite big."

As part of the remembering the 1989 grand final day at Canberra Stadium, the Wests Tigers will don their famous Balmain Strip, and both clubs will also compete for the inaugural VB 1989 League Legends Cup, which was launched earlier in the week.

The Raiders heritage jersey will be worn again next weekend against the Melbourne Storm, as part of the league's heritage round.
