Source: www.wiganwarriors.comWigan Warriors recorded their third win of the season with a 6-25 success against Salford City Reds at the Willows on Friday evening.
A tight first half with both teams making mistakes, but a try just before the interval from Chris Ashton followed by two quick tries before the hour mark from Sean O'Loughlin and Mark Calderwood were enough to see the Warriors move into a 20 point advantage. A score which the home side were unable to recover from.
A frantic start by Salford and Wigan as both sides looked for an early advantage. Defences were on top, the deadlock broken by a Richard's penalty on 10 minutes to make it 0-2.
The Reds equalised things five minutes later from the boot of John Wilshere, 2-2, the Warriors not allowing Salford a quick play the ball.
Wigan should have scored the games first try two minutes later, Leuluai with a kick which rebounded and Gareth Hock should have taken advantage but he knocked on with the line open.
The Warriors broke again on 26 minutes, Ashton combining with Pat Richards down the left. With an overlap Wigan wasted the opening as Ashton looked for Leuluai inside when he would have maybe been better keeping hold.
The first try was finally scored on 38 minutes, Leuluai's grubber kick bounced high and full back Chris Ashton re-acted the quickest to touchdown, Richard's added the conversion to give the Warriors a 2-8 half time advantage.
The Warriors extended their lead on 42 minutes through a further Richard's penalty to make it 2-10.
On 54 minutes Wigan got their second try of the night, Millard with a short pass and Sean O'Loughlin did well to stretch over for the four points, Richards added a simple conversion and the Warriors were now in the box seat leading 2-16.
The game was sealed two minutes later, Ashton and Bailey combined and found Mark Calderwood on the outside and the winger had the pace to score the try, his third of the season. Richard's goal made it 2-22.
Richard's struck a further penalty, the Reds penalised for obstruction to make it 2-24. A Trent Barrett drop goal made it 2-25 with five minutes left.
The home side managed a late consolation try from Kevin McGuiness to end the game 6-25 in favour of Brian Noble's side. At this stage Wigan were down to 12 men with the sin binning of Chris Ashton.
A well deserved win for Wigan on the back of the success last week against the Harlequins which sets them up for another game on the road next Friday at Hull FC.
