Source: www.giantsrl.comHuddersfield Giants went down by 18 points to 10 in a close fought battle at the Galpharm Stadium against defending Champions St Helens in front of the biggest crowd since the Giants first game in Super League in 1998.
The Giants began Super League 12 on a dry cold evening at the Galpharm Stadium against last seasons champions St Helens, this game having been brought forward from round 3 owing to the involvement of the Saints in the World Club Challenge.
The game began with both sides incurring early penalties and it was after the Giants had conceded one in their own half after 7 minutes that the Saints opened the scoring with Lee Gilmour going over, Sean Long missed the conversion attempt. It was not long however before the Giants were on the scoresheet, this time the Saints were penalised for obstruction in their own half and Chris Thorman slotted over the penalty kick.
It was though a very much stop-start affair with penalties being awarded at regular intervals by the referee and again the Giants were penalised in their own 20 metre area on 15 minutes when Sean Longs reverse pass put Leon Pryce in the clear for him to romp over, Long adding the extra points. Five minutes later the position got worse for the Giants when a break down the centre from Leon Pryce lead to Ade Gardner crossing for the third St Helens try of the half, Sean Long missed the conversion attempt.
The Giants had been starved of possession of the ball in the first 20 mins with the penalties conceded but when at last they did manage to get some quality possession Kevin Brown broke into the saints 20 and an excellent offload enabled Matt Gardner to touch down, the try being awarded on the nod of the video ref. Chris Thorman added the conversion with a superb kick from the touchline side and the deficit was down to six points. This was further reduced on 36 minutes when another St Helens penalty enabled Chris Thorman to kick his second penalty goal of the half.
The Giants could be reasonably satisfied with the 14-10 half time score; they had defended manfully against an St Helens side who had monopolised possession of the ball.
The second half began with the Giants having more of the ball and it was their turn to put the Saints defence under pressure. On 44 minutes a kick from Kevin Brown was scrambled dead by the Saints defence, the goal-line drop out being conceded. Chances were though being put to ground when the Giants got into the saints 20 metre area and this was to prove costly as on 49 minutes Lee Gilmour went over for his second try of the evening after excellent offloads. This came after the Giants had lost possession of the ball in their own half. Jason Hooper missed the conversion attempt but the Saints now had an 8 point advantage.
A further chance for the Giants was lost when Robbie Paul's kick went directly into touch when he tried to put Elford in at the corner, but at least this half the Giants were not conceding a similar number of penalties to the first half. The game had been played in excellent spirit but on 55 minutes Jon Wilkin was sin binned for a dreadful tackle on Chris Thorman which left the Giants captain concussed and unable to take any further part in the game. The incident was placed on report.
On 59 mins Eorl Crabtree almost got in for a try as the Giants pressured the saints defence but the video referee ruled no try. A Robbie Paul kick again almost lead to a Giants score but the saints defence was excellent. Try as they might the giants could not just find a way through and the hooter went with the Giants having given their all but the Saints just managing to hold on an run out winners.
Eorl Crabteree had taken the eye for the Giants particularly in the second half but the whole team had given their upmost. More of the same and the Giants should soon get on the winning side of matches.
