Darren Lockyer's season is over after suffering a knee injury in the Broncos 24-16 victory over the North Qld Cowboys last night.
Lockyer underwent scans today that confirmed an ACL tear that will require knee reconstruction surgery.
Lockyer suffered the injury in the second half and valiantly tried to run it off before succumbing in a tackle and coming off the field.
The injury to Lockyer comes as a bitter blow to the defending NRL premiers who have also only recently lost Brent Tate for the season and Justin Hodges for at least 4 more weeks.
Defending premiers have suffered horrendous injury tolls in recent years both the Bulldogs (2005) and Tigers (2006) suffered similar fates and missed the NRL finals in those seasons.
The Broncos currently sit in fourth place, but will be under enormous pressure to remain competitive with a weakened side for the rest of the season.
They are in a vein of form though, winning five straight after dropping as low as 15th after 12 rounds in 2007.
But they face a heavy challenge over the next month running into the Eels, Sharks, Sea Eagles, Storm and Bulldogs in their next 5 games.
Last night the Broncos blew the Cowboys off the field leading 24-4 at halftime following first half tries to Dane Carlaw (9th), Steve Michaels (18th), Karmichael Hunt (26th) and
Corey Parker (37th).
The Cowboys thought back with tries to Ashley Graham (53rd) and Matt Bowen (60th) but the Broncos strong defensive effort held out an further comeback.

Source: www.cowboys.com.auThe SOLD OUT sign was put up today at Dairy Farmers Stadium by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys ahead of their Round 18 game against Brisbane tomorrow night.
All remaining outer tickets were snapped up just before midday. Toyota Cowboys CEO Peter Parr believes North Queenslanders have voted with their feet. "Our supporters are some of the most passionate in the NRL and they continue to support our club in great numbers week after week".
Toyota Cowboys home crowds are the third highest in the National Rugby League.
Get to the game early and use the public transport are the other messages coming from the Cowboys. "To avoid any congestion entering the Stadium on Friday I would encourage all to arrive early and catch public transport if possible. I would also ask for people to be patient if there are delays", Peter Parr said
All car parking at Dairy Farmers Stadium has been sold so if you need to drive, park the car at Willows Shoppingtown and catch a Townsville Sunbus to the ground. Gates open at 4pm with the first game Semi-Final of the Australian Secondary Schools Championships between Queensland and Affiliated States to commence at 4.15pm tomorrow.
