The Gold Coast Titans have moved into 4th position on the premiership table with an exciting 28-22 victory at Cararra Stadium last night.
Matt Petersen scored his first career hat-trick and Mat Rogers right on the full-time siren produced one of the all-time great tackles to help the Titans move further up the table in what has been a fairytale return season to date and a great start for John Cartwright's coaching career.
Gold Coast led 10-6 at the break with Petersen scoring his first try four minutes into the game and Brett Delaney crossed in the 14th minute. Young halfback Luke Walsh was the Knights only tryscorer in the opening 40 minutes when he crossed in the 7th minute.
Petersen's second try extended the Titans lead to 16-6 three minutes into the second half. Newcastle came back into the match with Daniel Tolar scoring in the 52nd minute, but a try to Rogers three minutes later extended the margin back out to ten points.
Adam MacDougall got the Knights back within four points when he crossed over with 14 minutes remaining. Petersen's hat-trick five minutes later looked to have sealed victory for the Titans with a 10 point lead and under 10 minutes to go.
James McManus gave Newcastle a chance with a try in the final stages, but a missed conversion from Kurt Gidley meant the Knights had to score and convert to send the match into Golden Point.
Newcastle were attacking the line right on full-time and Cory Paterson was set to score for all money beating the first tackle and was over the line only for Rogers to get underneath and drive him back into the field of play for a last tackle turnover.
Gold Coast hung on to win the game where it will deservedly be remembered for Petersen's first hat-trick and a try-saving tackle that deserves every accolade that comes its way.

Source: www.newcastleknights.com.auThe Newcastle Knights have revealed another significant addition to their 2008 playing roster, announcing a three year deal with utility forward, Chris Houston.
The St George Illawarra rookie has agreed to terms with the Knights for three years and will wear the blue and red until at least the end of the 2010 season.
"Chris offers plenty as a football player," said Knights Coach, Brian Smith.
"He's 194 centimetres, 22 years of age, he cracked first grade this season and has versatility. He can play from front row back to lock.
"We also feel Chris has a lot to offer off the field.
"He's a very intelligent bloke, very well presented and there are people at the St George Illawarra club who felt he was a potential leader, possibly even captain material."Meanwhile, Smith has named his line up for this weekend's inaugural Knights / Titans clash at Carrara Stadium.
Kade Snowden moves into the starting side for prop, Josh Perry who injured his hamstring in last nights 22-18 win over the Raiders.
George Carmont retains the number 3 for Luke MacDougall and junior halves pairing, Luke Walsh and Jarrod Mullen will continue their reunion on the Gold Coast.
"They've never played together at NRL level before so the fact they did it so well first off is very encouraging."
"There's a real lack of any negative in our team at the moment."
"Just in the last three or four weeks there's been a completely different feel about our preparation and it's a nice buzz at the moment, very nice."KNIGHTS v TITANS
