Manly's impressive defence and their Brookvale fortress record continued as they defeated South Sydney 14-2 in wet and terrential conditions last night.
The rain in Sydney was once again relentless costing the Sea Eagles a certain 20,000 crowd as only 7,341 people braving the elements with many fans from both clubs preferring to watch the live coverage in the warmth and comfort of their lounge rooms.
Souths opened up the scoring in the 5th minute when Nathan Merritt landed an early penalty goal.
Manly struck back in the 8th minute with Matt Orford producing a pin point bomb where Steve Menzies pounced on the loose ball to score his 160th try in his 310th first grade appearance. Jamie Lyon added the extras and also landed a penalty goal in the 28th minute for the Sea Eagles to lead 8-2.
The Rabbitohs had their opportunities and were denied a try when referee Steve Clark ruled a pass from Ben Rogers to David Fa'alogo went forward when at best it could be deemed marginal.
Brett Stewart continued his impressive Brookvale try scoring record with a try in the 33rd minute and Lyon again converted to give Manly a very crucial 14-2 in the conditions.
No points were scored in the second half as the conditions got the better of quick attacking play, but credit must be given to the defence of both sides. Manly coach Des Hasler has the Sea Eagles brilliantly drilled defensively and their position on the table is justification of what goes with their attitude, desire and application in defence. Souths under Jason Taylor have improved their defence out of sight, but lack the attacking spark to be a serious threat in the competition.
