Sat May 26, 2007 Source: www.raiders.com.auThe CFMEU Canberra Raiders have notched up their first back-to-back win of the season, comprehensively outplaying the St George Illawarra Dragons to cruise to a 30-6 victory at a chilly Canberra Stadium tonight. Adrian Purtell was the star for the home side, grabbing a hat-trick of tries to help bury the Dragons. The Raiders had all of the early possession, but this wasn't converted into points until the Dragons went on the attack, with Purtell breaking the shackles in the 28th minute with an intercept and running the length of the field to cross for the Raiders' opening try. The Raiders centre made it a double with another try just before the halftime break to give the Raiders a handy 12-0 lead. The Raiders weathered some early pressure in the second half, before kicking away through a William Zillman try after Lincoln Withers sent captain Alan Tongue through a hole in the Dragons defence with a well-timed pass. The Raiders then put the game away with two more tries in the space of six minutes, firstly through Neville Costigan, who smashed his way through the Dragons goal line defence, before Purtell capped his best NRL game by latching onto a kick-through which was fumbled into the in-goal by the Dragons defence. Michael Dobson made it a perfect night with the boot by slotting the touchline conversion. A late consolation try to the Dragons was not enough to take the shine off a magnificent defensive performance by the Raiders, made even more meritous by the abscence this week of head Coach Neil Henry, who was away on Queensland State of Origin duties. Scott Logan led the way up front for the Raiders in his best game for the club so far. CFMEU Canberra Raiders 30 (A Purtell 3, N Costigan, W Zillman tries; M Dobson 5 goals) d.
