Benji Marshall has finally delivered and ended his form slump inspiring the Wests Tigers to their first victory of the season defeating Cronulla 14-12 in Golden Point at Campbelltown Stadium.
The form of Marshall has been one of the major talking points this season and finally it has taken five matches for the attacking genius to strike. Marshall had a wretched 2006 season with two shoulder injuries after a stellar 2005 season where his brilliance was the difference between the Wests Tigers and the rest of the competition when they won the premiership.
Wests got off to the absolutely perfect start when they regained possession from the kick off and moments later Daniel Fitzhenry crossed over in the corner. Marshall added the extras for the Tigers to lead 6-0.
Cronulla worked their way back into the match and scored in the 14th minute when David Simmons collected a cross field kick from Brett Kimmorley. Luke Covell was unable to convert as the Tigers held a two point lead.
Greg Bird was awarded a controversial penalty try in the 39th minute following an interesting video referees decision. John Morris tackled Bird as he was going for the ball in the ingoal area with Bird having the inside running. Video referee Tim Mander probably ruled correctly and it's good to see such decisions awarded. Parramatta hooker PJ Marsh was disallowed the most elementry of penalty tries in the second round and the players attitude has since been that the decision makers won't be making the tough calls. Players will now at least think twice before committing the foul. Covell converted from under the posts for the Sharks to lead 10-6 at the break.
The second half was an arm wrestle with no points scored for 31 minutes Covell landed a penalty goal with nine minutes remaining to extend the Sharks lead to a converted try.
In the end the decision to go for the two points ultimately backfired as Wests struck three minutes later with Marshall finally delivering when he scooped up a loose ball and quick as a flash raced 70m to score. Marshall converted to level up the scores.
Wests Tigers have been the masters of losing close matches losing their last eight matches that were within six points including all four games they've played in Golden Point. It all changed this week with Marshall landing a penalty goal one minute into the extra time period to secure the Tigers their first win of the season.
Only the Sydney Roosters remain winless after five rounds.

Source: www.weststigers.com.auWests Tigers has thrown its support behind the National Breast Cancer Foundation in a unique way.
On Sunday, April 15, Wests Tigers players will take to Campbelltown Sports Stadium against Cronulla wearing pink numbers.
This one-off gesture is the Wests Tigers way of helping to raise awareness of breast cancer - the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian women.
Wests Tigers captain Brett Hodgson lost his mum to breast cancer in May 2000.
Hodgson is featured in the autumn/winter edition of The Cancer Council's Smart Living magazine talking about his mum's battle with breast cancer.
Wests Tigers will also hold an official Cuppa for Cancer luncheon in May. Proceeds from the lunch will go to the Cancer Council.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation is Australia's only independent, not-for-profit community organisation funding research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. For more information, go to
