Tue August 22, 2006 Source: www.hullfc.comIn a very tough encounter Hull FC held on to second place all thanks to Richard Horne's dramatic last-second drop goal at the KC Stadium. With Paul Cooke and Richard Horne already failing with drop-goal attempts, fans must have been biting their nails before Horne landed the clinching one-pointer at the death. Hull FC welcomed back top try scorer Kirk Yeaman after an eight-week injury and although he failed to add to his 21 tries this season he impressed with a solid performance. The Black and Whites dominated for most of the first half and led 8-0 thanks a penalty goal from Paul Cooke and Danny Washbrook's try which saw him cutting through a tight Salford defence with Cooke adding the conversion. The pattern of the game changed moments before the interval when Hull's Shayne McMenemy was sinbinned for a professional foul on John Wilshere. From the subsequent set of six, Simon Finnegan raced on to Malcolm Alker's looping pass to haul Salford back into the contest. Wilshere forced his way over in the corner to score Salford's second try soon after the break to put them 10-8 ahead, although David Hodgson failed to add the extras. Cooke levelled with a penalty and the Hull defence stood strong before they were lifted by McMenemy's return. The game showed that the two sides were evenly match in defence as the forwards tried to break the line to no avail. It was only in the dying seconds that Hull FC's Richard Horne took the victory. Salford Coach Karl Harrison described the match as a "tough, tough game." He thought his team marshalled a pretty good Hull FC team. Hull FC's coach Peter Sharp was more than happy with his team in what he described as, "A very enjoyable game." He added, "There were a couple of decisions both way's that could of change the game that's for sure. We got down there a couple of times in a position for the drop goal, the boys are working very hard as a team and that's the pleasing part."Report source: www.hullfc.comArticle: Sharp delighted with last grasp win |
