Successive victories from Wakefield have moved them four points clear of bottom placed Wigan following Friday's 34-26 victory against fellow Super League battlers Castleford at Belle Vue. Castleford called on 38-year-old Brad Davis to make another comeback and fill the halfback void and help the recently promoted Tigers get their season back on track following a 51-14 loss against Catalans last week.
A healthy crowd of 8,237 turned up to watch the clash with Castleford jumping out of the blocks in the opening ten minutes with tries to Michael Shenton and Richard Fletcher as the Tigers raced to a 10-0 lead with Fletcher only converting his own try.
Wakefield sprung into action with tries to David Solomona in the 15th minute and Colum Halpenny four minutes later as they gained the lead with Jamie Rooney online with both goals.
Waine Pryce regained Castleford's lead in the 28th minute when he scored with Fletcher converting for the Tigers to lead 16-12.
Two tries in the final six minutes of the first half to Ryan Atkins and Daniel Griffin with Rooney successful with both conversions gave the Wildcats a 24-16 lead at halftime.
Ben Jeffries crossed over eight minutes after halftime to expand Wakefield's lead to 28-16 but Rooney couldn't put the home side more than two converted tries clear. Jeffries was sent to the sin bin soon after with Castleford getting within two points with tries to Luke Dyer in the 64th minute and Deon Bird in the 69th. Davis failed to convert Dyer's try but Fletcher was on target with the conversion of Bird's try.
Wakefield sealed victory in the 73rd minute when substitute Paul White crossed over with Rooney converting to push the home side eight clear and in the zone of comfort with the two points in the bag.
Wakefield coach Tony Smith said,
"I have sat here five times this year and said we've played well and not got the points but now we've not played well but we've got the two points. Our completion rate was poor and we need to find that killer instinct and finish teams off. Overall, it's pleasing to get the two points and now we'll get ready for Hull."Castleford coach Terry Matterson found positives from the defeat and was pleased with the efforts of veteran Davis. Matterson said,
"Brad was good, he got us around .We just came up with too many errors and gave away too many penalties. There were a lot of positives from the game and, if we had had that effort last week, we would have won."Scoring Details:
