Source: www.wiganwarriors.comWigan went down to their second home defeat of the new season, 12-24 against Warrington Wolves on Friday night.Wigan have just one victory now from their opening five games and it leaves the cherry and whites very much in the wrong area of the Super League table.
A disappointing result with away trips to Castleford, Bradford ,Wakefield and St Helens to come.
Wigan had plenty of possession in the opening fifteen minutes and for spells were camped in the Warrington 20 metre area but were unable to make the break through. On a couple of occasions both Moran and Orr tested Wolves winger Barnett with kicks but he stood up to the test.
The Warriors were also nearly caught twice with two interception passes as Wigan pressed for the first points of this derby game.
After 18 minutes, Bryan Fletcher was introduced by Ian Millward for his first team debut. Fletcher making an appearance after a successful forty minutes in the academy in midweek. The big Aussie got a great reception from the home fans as he took to the pitch.
It took him only a matter of minutes to score his first try for the club taking a short pass from Dennis Moran to dive over out wide. Danny Tickle struck the conversion and the pressure had finally told with a 6-0 scoreline.
Warrington hit straight back on 26 minutes, Kohe-Love sending Richie Barnett in for a try in the left hand corner. Lee Briers hit a superb two points to level the game at 6-6.
Right on the stroke of half time a clever Lee Briers kick was followed by Chris Bridge and he was able to carry the kick on and dive over for the Wolves second try. The Briers goal edged Warrington into a 6-12 interval lead.
On 49 minutes, Lee Briers popped over a drop goal to extend the score to 6-13.
On 52 minutes, Wayne Godwin was sent to the sin bin for a late challenge on Briers and from the penalty the same player hit a penalty to make it 6-15. The incident was put on report by referee Ashley Klein. On 57 minutes Briers stuck his second one pointer, the Wolves just happy to come away with points when in Warriors territory, 6-16.
On 64 minutes the Warrington number six did it again, another drop goal his third, 6-17. By this time Wigan had lost the services of Paleaaesina who had hobbled off injured.
The game was just about sealed four minutes later, the visitors scoring a try through winger Henry Fa?fili, quick hands out wide made it 6-21, Briers even added the extras from the touchline 6-23.
It was little more than consolation as Wayne Godwin crossed for his sides second try which was converted by Dennis Moran to make it 12-23 on 73 minutes.
Briers added a fourth drop goal late on, it finished 12-24.
