Source: www.wiganwarriors.comDespite a pitch covered in snow with only the marking lines clear and freezing temperatures, amazingly this game at The Willows was given the all clear by referee Karl Kirkpatrick.
Wigan made one change from the side that beat Huddersfield last week with no Sean OLoughlin, the skipper missing out with a slight groin injury. That meant a switch for Kevin Brown to loose forward and a start for Danny Orr. For Salford, John Wilshere returned after suspension and Luke Robinson was included after recovering from injury to face his former side.
Both sides bravely threw the ball around despite the awful conditions but it was the home side that came away with the two Super League points and leave Wigan with their third loss from their opening four games of the new season.
Despite a bright start from Wigan it was Salford who opened the scoring on seven minutes. Robinson with a kick into the corner and Simon Finnigan rose above Mark Calderwood to touch down. David Hodgson hit a great conversion, 6-0 to the home side.
Salford extended their lead soon after through a Hodgson penalty, 8-0.
On sixteen minutes the Warriors hit back, a Moran kick was pushed out wide and Aussie Pat Richards was able to dive over on the right. Danny Tickles attempted conversion struck the upright, 8-4.
On 36 minutes, a clever inside pass from Malcolm Alker found Andy Coley in support and he was able to power over for the home sides second try. Hodgson hit the extras to give the Reds a 14-4 lead and thats the way it stayed until the interval.
With just four second half minutes on the clock Danny Orr took advantage of a Richards grubber kick for the Warriors second try, Tickle hit the goal and Ian Millwards men were right back in the game at 14-10.
Salford were denied a try a forward pass from Robinson to Baldwin on the hour mark, that was followed by a quick tap penalty opportunity which Kirkpatrick pulled back. The home side were not denied on 62 minutes as John Wilshere was able to find a gap in the left hand corner. The winger managing to score despite two Warriors defenders. The conversion was missed 18-10. The try meant Wigan needed to score twice, it wasnt to be.
Salford just about wrapped it up with ten minutes left. Superb play as the home side kept the ball alive on the final tackle and Wilshere fed Andrew Dunemann for his first Reds try, the conversion was hit by Hodgson, 24-10.
The Reds cemented the win with a further try late on from Hodgson and it ended 28-10.
