Sun July 16, 2006 The Canberra Raiders have pulled off yet another golden point victory, downing the Wests Tigers 20-18 in an exciting contest at Canberra Stadium today. A Clinton Schifcofske penalty conversion in the 83rd minute finally decided the match after drop goal attempts from Todd Carney, Brett Hodgson and Scott Prince had missed their mark. Both sides came into this clash locked on 18 competition points with the loser likely to be out of the running for a finish in the top eight. Wests Tigers had the better of the opening exchanges scoring two tries in the opening 15 minutes to lead 12-0. Dean Collis was first to score in the 8th minute and Hodgson crossed over in the 14th minute with the Wests Tigers captain converting his own try and also the Collis try. Canberra worked their way back into the match with tries to Marshall Chalk and Phil Graham in the 20th and 30th minutes respectively. They were a little unlucky not to take a lead into halftime after having two tries disallowed. The Raiders took the lead shortly after halftime after a neat flick pass by Jason Smith sent Todd Carney over for his 7th try of the season. Wests Tigers leveled up the scores with Shannon McDonnell crossing over in the 66th minute. The drop goal frenzy begun with the two evenly matched sides heading to Golden Point. Todd Payten was penalised for stripping the ball in a two man tackle with Raiders captain Clinton Schifcofske landing a penalty goal to deliver them their 3rd golden point victory of the season and 4th overall from as many attempts. Canberra earlier in the season defeated Penrith and North Queensland in Golden Point. The first Golden Point situation resulted in Manly kicking a penalty goal against Parramatta in 2003 and this is only the second occasion where extra time has ended in a penalty goal situation with a try or drop-goal the normal result except on three occasions where the result has ended in a draw with Souths featuring on all three occasions against North Queensland, Brisbane and Canterbury in 2004-05. Canberra keep their Finals hopes alive whilst the Wests Tigers without Benji Marshall face an uphill battle. The top four looks settled with Manly the only challenger to the top four sides - Melbourne, Canterbury, Brisbane and St George Illawarra. The 6th-8th positions is wide open with only Souths and Auckland out of contention. |
