Sun July 2, 2006 Source: www.cowboys.com.auBreaking a 6 match losing streak in an error riddled and at times frustrating match, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys defeated the South Sydney Rabbitoh's 16-14 at Dairy Farmers stadium. In front of 17 506 spectators a new look Cowboys side took the field with 3 players away on representative duty while two players, Mark Henry and Brent McConnell made their NRL debuts. Representative back Ty Williams also made a welcome return to the NRL after breaking his leg in round 3. Both sides took the field coming off disappointing losses the previous round, and from the outset they struggled to settle into a rhythm of play, with many handling errors, and missed opportunities punctuating the match. Three tries in the first half resulted directly from mistakes, with the visitors capitalising on two Cowboys handling errors to go to the half time break leading 10-6. In the end the Cowboy's ability to put back to back sets together, maintaining pressure for the last 10 minutes allowed the wining try to be scored by debutant Brent McConnell with just 5 minutes to go. For the Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen played courageously with an injured ankle in the second half while both debutantes made impressive debuts and out wide veteran Paul Bowman was solid as ever. This game was a four game with the Toyota Cowboys having the bye round next week. Report source: www.cowboys.com.au |
