Sun July 2, 2006 Source: www.warriors.co.nzLast week it was three in a row for the first time since 2003, now it's four straight after the Vodafone Warriors came back from a halftime deficit to beat Penrith in their NRL match at Ericsson Stadium on Saturday night. After two Simon Mannering tries had given the home side a 10-2 lead inside the first quarter, the Panthers came back with tries to centres Danny Galea and Lee Hookey. With Preston Campbell kicking an early penalty and converting both tries, Penrith had an unlikely 14-10 halftime lead. The momentum swung in the second spell as Vodafone Warriors captain Ruben Wiki surged across for his fifth try of the season with the half only eight minutes old, Tony Martin's conversion putting his side back in front 16-14. And Martin then finished off the try of the match in the 56th minute. Right on his own line, winger Patrick Ah Van attacked a Luke Priddis last tackle kick, split the Penrith line and ran 60 metres before linking with Martin who went in wide out for his sixth try of the year. With his spendid sideline conversion going over, the Vodafone Warriors seemed to be in a perfect position to go on with things at 22-14. Just as quickly, though, the Panthers were back in it with a converted Priddis try and a Campbell penalty locking the match up at 22-22 with 12 minutes to play. The arm wrestle was on and in the 75th minute the Vodafone Warriors cracked it after some concerted pressure, Nathan Fien's inside ball opening the way for Brent Webb to snare his ninth try of the year and go past 200 first-grade points. Martin's fourth conversion - giving him 12 points - boosted the lead to 28-22, an advantage the Vodafone Warriors protected for their first run of four wins on end since the club's five-match winning streak late in the 2003 season. In scoring 28 points, the Vodafone Warriors became just the second team - after Newcastle - to reach 400 points this season. The Vodafone Warriors face the Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium in Sydney next Sunday. Report source: www.warriors.co.nz |
