Sun June 18, 2006 South Sydney's winning run has come to end with Parramatta returning to form defeating the Rabbitohs 30-10 in a match where simply too many mistakes from Souths cost them any chance of victory. Paul Mellor got Souths off to a great start when he scored a try in the 7th minute and kept that lead until Fui Fui Moi Moi crashed over with Brett Delaney converting for the Eels to lead 6-4. Delaney extended Parramatta's lead to 10-4 in the 31st minute when Jarryd Hayne did a great job taking a John Morris bomb and keeping the ball alive in play where Delaney toed ahead to score. PJ Marsh scored with under a minute before halftime to basically put the match out of Souths reach with the Eels going to the break leading 16-4. Parramatta quickly extended that lead to 22-4 when Morris scored with Delaney adding the extras. Souths crossed for their second try in the 69th minute when a bomb from Shane Walker hit the cross bar with Manase Manuokafoa in position to score. Ben Walker converted to give the Rabbitohs a faint chance being within two converted tries heading into the final 10 minutes. Any chance of a Rabbitohs comeback was ended when Mark Riddell landed a penalty goal to push Parramatta 12 clear and Nathan Hindmarsh scored a well-deserved try in the final stages to seal a much needed victory for the Eels. Parramatta coach Jason Taylor after the match said, "We just wanted to win. We wanted to get a start and know look to Canberra. We were really good across the field. We got a nice little lead and held them out. That was the real highlight of from a team perspective. We used the hope of making the top eight as motivation and we are clinging onto that. We showed a lot of character and we had great defence." |
