Sun June 11, 2006 The Sharks have continued their rise up the table into 4th position as they disposed of a disappointing and out of form North Queensland outfit 26-4 in Townsville last night. Veteran halfback Brett Kimmorley was superb for Cronulla as he led the side brilliantly around the field, his kicking game was pin-point accurate and scored the first try after nine minutes of play. Luke Covell added the extras for the Sharks to lead 6-0. Cronulla could have gone further ahead when Nigel Vagana took an intercept on his own line and raced the length of the field to score only for referee Sean Hampstead to blow a penalty against the visitors. The Bowen cousins combined for North Queensland's opening try when Matthew put up an excellent bomb for winger Brenton to climb above the pack to score. Josh Hannay failed to convert with Cronulla leading by two points. Covell landed a penalty goal on the 30 minute mark to push the Sharks lead out to 8-4, which remained that way until halftime. The second half was all one way traffic as the Sharks cashed in on the errors the Cowboys made and recorded themselves a commanding victory that is only going to help them in crucial for and against points. Darren Albert extended Cronulla's lead in the 49th minute when Brenton Bowen fumbled a kick from Kimmorley with Albert on the spot to score. Covell converted for the Sharks to lead 14-4. Paul Gallen all but sealed for the Sharks with a determined try in the 57th minute as he continues his outstanding season and must be closing in on State of Origin selection should opportunities and injuries arise. Hutch Maiava wrapped up a great night for the visitors when he bulldozed his way through some feeble Cowboys defence to crash over. Covell landed his 5th goal to keep his 100% record in tact. Should the Raiders win tomorrow, as they are in with a great chance as the Bulldogs have many players out, the Sharks will remain in the top four and a great achievement for coach Stuart Raper after pre-season tragedy and a slow start to the year on the field. |
