Mon May 29, 2006 The Dragons enjoyed their best victory of the season on Friday night against Newcastle but unfortunately it has been spoiled with captain Trent Barrett facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after being charged with a grade five striking offence. The charge follows an incident involving Newcastle winger Brian Carney in the 14th minute during St.George-Illawarra's impressive 38-12 victory where Barrett was one of the leading performers for the Dragons. Barrett was never penalised and the video referee never picked up the incident when Carney was receiving attention. Barrett will miss six matches with an early guilty plea, or could face eight weeks on the sidelines if he contests the charge at the judiciary and loses. St.George-Illawarra have been inconsistent this season and Friday's performance against Newcastle was their most complete of the season and even more impressive considering it was at Energy Australia Stadium. The Dragons raced out to a 20-0 lead with tries to Mark Gasnier, Ben Hornby and a double to Chester Hill Junior Corey Payne with Andrew Johns getting Newcastle on the board with a trademark try close to the line. It was all the visitors in the second half as three further tries through Danny Wicks, Barrett and a second try to Hornby for the Dragons to lead 28-6. The Hornby try was the worst video referee decision of all-time and that incident should see the NRL have a serious look at the replay system and see whether it has been a good or bad thing for Rugby League compared to the in-goal touch judge system used in place between 1991-97. There's been no news from the Dragons as to whether they'll contest the Barrett charge or take the six weeks. TV footage in the early stages shows that Barrett does have a case to get it downgraded from a Grade Five but there could be footage the NRL has that no one is yet to see. |
