Sat May 27, 2006 Brisbane are outright premiership leaders tonight following a 25-6 win over a flat Bulldogs side at Suncorp tonight. The Bulldogs were disgraceful, never turning up to play with only Reni Maitua showing any glimpses of brilliance for the blue and whites. They would not have beaten any other side in the competition with their performance tonight. The Broncos on the other hand, with more players backing up from Origin than the Bulldogs, were full of energy and were never headed after jumping out of the blocks early with three tries in the opening 14 minutes. Tame Tupou grabbed the opener with the Broncos patented second man play on the edges, with Shaun Berrigan and Darius Boyd crossing on different edges of the field. Neither of the three tries were converted by Corey Parker, having an off night with the boot. Dominating possession and field position it took the Bulldogs over 20 minutes for their first attacking opportunity, but constant incompletions and poor options saw them never close to scoring the opening 40. A poor one on one miss by Daniel Holdsworth on Corey Parker set up Darren Lockyer under the posts for an 18-0 lead that the Broncos took into the break. The Bulldogs crossed in the 43rd minute with Holdsworth making amends with an over the shoulder pass to send Reni Maitua in for a try. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs it wasn't a sign of things to come as they continued to play flat and make basic mistakes. A rampaging Tupou barged his way through Hazem El Masri to score in the corner to send the Broncos out to a 24-6 lead in the 50th minute. Darren Lockyer put the game completely out of reach with a field goal 15 minutes from full time, 25-6 being the full time score. The Bulldogs were fortunate not to have been thrashed with the Broncos unable to capitalise fully on the wealth of opportunities they were given throughout the match. Steven Folkes will be well within his right to send several players back to premier league for next weeks clash against the Knights, the effort levels of his players were sub-standard and the amount of basic errors and no game plan made would be of particular concern. |
