Mon May 15, 2006 Brisbane have continued their fine start to the season comprehensively defeating premiership contenders Manly 32-10 at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night with Darren Lockyer outstanding building on his form after a very slow start to the year. The Broncos head into the State of Origin season with a 7-3 record and coach Wayne Bennett will be mindful of the effects the mid-season representative games will have after Brisbane has successfully fallen apart in the second half of the year each season after they last won the premiership in 2000. Manly started the match the better side with Anthony Watmough scoring in the 13th minute with Matt Orford adding the extras. Brisbane bounced back to score three unanswered tries to lead 14-6 at the break. Karmichael Hunt scored in the 24th minute with tries followed up by Brett Seymour in the 30th and Corey Parker five minutes later. Parker was only able to convert this own try. Brisbane started the second half how they finished the first half with captain Lockyer scoring in the 47th minute to open up a 20-6 lead following Parker's conversion. Justin Hodges continued his outstanding form with a 59th minute try and Lockyer tookover the kicking duties to push the Broncos clear at 26-6. Chris Hicks scored a consolation try in the 74th minute but the Broncos weren't done with Hunt scoring his second try in the final minute and Parker's conversion gave the Broncos a commanding 32-10 victory. Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett after the match said, "Heading into Origin after round 10 I was budgeting for a win-loss of 6-4 or 5-5, so we are ahead of what I thought they could do after the heavy round 1 loss to the Cowboys."Bennett was impressed with halfback Brett Seymour and went on to say, "There was a lot of maturity about Brett's game tonight in which I thought his kicking game was outstanding. He will remain in contention for halfback selection even though Shane Perry is expected to return for the next match."It wasn't all good news for the Broncos with prop Shane Webcke coming off after four minutes with a rib injury and he'll miss around 2-4 weeks. Webcke is expected to be back for the Broncos Round 12 clash against Canterbury. The loss of Webcke is a huge blow as he was to takeover the Broncos captaincy in the absence of Lockyer for the Origin matches. |
